That depends on how overweight you are. If you're shooting for an "ideal" BMI, and are 38 pounds over that, then it's totally do-able. Losing ten pounds a month is completely realistic. Here's how I did it:

Here’s all you need to lose weight and get healthy. First, you have to realize there is no quick, long lasting weight loss plan or pill that is going to do the trick. It’s purely mental. You have to learn to “Eat to live, don’t live to eat”. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? It is, if you understand that you are going to be reprogramming how you think about eating for the next few weeks. Old habits die hard, right? Not really. You get rid of bad habits by replacing them with good habits. If you learn to count your calories, keep calorie intake lower than output, exercise moderately, and eat only healthy food, you will lose weight. That’s a fact. All it takes is repetition. All success stories have this in common: The successful folks among us know how to be patient, persistent, and consistent. Set a goal and stick with it. The benefits of feeling good will outweigh any sense of sacrifice you might feel about having to push away that cake and ice cream. Eating whole foods rather than processed food gives your digestive system a workout that burns calories. For example: choose an apple over apple juice.
Workout with Weights - Building muscle mass will replace stored fat. As you build muscle tissue your metabolism increases.
Don't Forget Cardio - You need to get that heart rate up and breathe a little heavier. Twenty to thirty minutes of cardiovascular activity 5 days a week is recommended. Brisk walking or swimming are good. Or utilize exercise equipment (exercise bike, treadmill, or elliptical trainer).

Fry or sauté foods in a non-stick cook wear with low-calorie fat.

Baking or boiling is recommended instead of frying.

Eat high-fiber foods.

Use sugar substitutes while sweetening foods and beverages.

Opt for light menus in restaurants, or purchase low-calorie or reduced-fat products at the grocery store.

Never skip meals. Eat three to six times a day in smaller portions to avoid getting hungry.

Use a smaller plate at mealtime to satisfy your psychological need to see a full plate.

Eat and chew slowly. Stop eating before you feel full. (It takes 20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain that it is full!)

Weigh yourself on a regular schedule, but don’t become a slave to your scale.

Reward yourself with pleasures other than food--buy some new clothes, get a different hair style, see a movie, visit a friend, etc.

Hey:
I lost 40 lbs in three months by:
Vegan dieting and working out everyday for 40 minutes on the treadmill.
Using lots of water and lemon juice.
Hope that works for you.
