When I plug the camera into my laptop, it shows me the photos on the memory card and also an XML document called WMPInfo (??) but when the camera is not plugged into the laptop I can see there are about 10 photos on the camera that are not coming up when I plug it in!! (Sometimes when I turn on my camera it accesses the memory card, and sometimes it just accesses the 10 or so photos on the camera itself)

take the memory card out, then plug it into the computer.

It sounds like you are talking about photos that have been saved to your camera's internal memory, which some cameras have.
So, you need to transfer the photos from internal memory onto your memory card.
This is usually done in the MENU...and you should have the option to be able to transfer photos.
Check your user manual if you don't know how to do this. Once this is done, you can then upload them to your computer.
Or you should have the option to directly transfer your photos from internal memory directly to your computer. Check your user manual.
And once you have uploaded ALL your photos, you should probably Format your memory card and also your internal memory storage.

Perhaps you could provide additional information such as camera make and model, so you could get a definite answer.
good luck...

It depends on the format of the film, camera, and songs. You might find that it can a ten minute movie, 50 photos, and 3 songs one day, then the next it could be a 2 minute movie 100 pictures and 5 songs. Just purely movies, it would have to be around 30 minutes. This is around what I got on the highest setting on my video cam. If you use a lower setting, it will become longer. Images, it depends on the quality. On my two gigabyte card, I can get 274 images at the highest setting: RAW. At the absolute lowest setting, it is over 6,000. Just depends. For songs, it also depends on the length, and if there is a music video with it. For songs, it would be around 500, judging by MP3 players with a 2 gig memory.

As `Dave` said, Take the card out to access the camera`s memory, there may be more on the memory than photographs. On mine, an Olympus there are some graphics, titles an son on.

Look for an option to transfer images from the camera's internal memory to the memory card (like mobile phones can store numbers in their internal memory or on the SIMM card, and you can copy from one to the other).

I presume there was an instruction manual with the camera when you bought it. Try looking there.
