I think the symbolism is more for the mind and how it operates. Liturgy wasn't part of early religion, that I know of, but some try to reprogram us by it's use. We understand better ways now, which interestingly equate with actually doing what was indicated in sacred texts like meditating and thinking of them, understanding them and adding the emotions, combined under the word love.
I think I would use a more general definition as adhering religiously to a belief, whether including a higher being or not, although that's not the popular definition. I would include Communism as religion, the highest concept of Communists. Some people would consider that strange, but it is one of the definitions.
Belief seems to be greatly misunderstood as irrational belief. That is only one kind of belief or else some would consider belief in Evolution an irrational belief, if beliefs were all irrational. Admittedly some religionists use it in that way and could be considered irrational.
Rational has it's problem also. If we haven't reasoned something out does that mean it's irrational? I'm afraid so, and we haven't reasoned everything out. Again that may sound odd, but it's the proper use of language and sparks all sorts of creativity and understanding. It also brings people together, knowing that we don't know everything and shouldn't think irrational is bad. It really depends, that's relativity.

Religion: Organized belief system based on the assumption that the supernatural exists and can be understood through personal faith.

Or at least that is my definition. Not all forms of spirituality meet the definition of religion, even if you put in the symbols and social groups.

there really aren't many christian denominations that use liturgy anymore. we do in my church, but not many other protestant sects do that at all.

religion is simply the adherence to a belief or set of beliefs. not all religion is spiritual, and not all spirituality is religious.
