If you're looking for a "professional" level camera then you want a DSLR with interchangeable lenses and full manual control. Canon, Sony, Nikon, Pentax all offer affordable DSLR cameras. Visit shutterbug.com for camera reviews.

Will you be using the camera professionally or do you just want one with a lot of features? Its always a good idea to make a list of different ways you want to use your camera. Sports? Scenics? Interiors of buildings? Macro photography? Weddings? Portraits? All of the above?

Once you decide on a camera, visit these sites:

cameraarmor.com
bonicadive.com.

Getting the extra protection their covers offer is woth the investment.

Next, buy a quality (HOYA, TIFFEN, B+W are brands I use) HAZE/UV filter or a Skylight 1A (uncoated) or 1B (coated) filter and leave it on your lens. I firmly believe that no lens should go out in the world naked - it should always wear a protective filter. The only exception is the 16mm "fisheye" lens with its 180 degree angle of view. Replacing a damaged filter is always cheaper than replacing a lens. The HAZE/UV filter will enhance your photos by "cutting through" atmospheric haze. The Skylight filter will remove the bluish tint seen in distant mountains or in photos taken in open shade.

A polarizer filter (circular, NOT linear) should be your next purchase. The polarizer allows you to darken blue sky to make clounds really "pop" or just to add visual impact. It also eliminates glare from water, glass, sand, snow or painted metal.
