I was baptised yesterday and it was cold winter. When I was in the water, my eyes were opened and after emerging I was shivering. However, I still feel the same as before as though nothing has changed. But my church believes that baptism is necessary for salvation and that in Romans 6 it is said baptism 'puts you onto Christ'. However I was plagued with severe doubt and emotional distress after my baptism as I didn't experience happiness and peace. Does anyone know what's going on? Should I be rebaptised?

PS: I was very nervous before my baptism.

Yesterday was cold winter? Where do you live?

Baptism does not save a person - only Jesus can do that. You were nervous and didnt know what to expect. Its your new life in Christ that will bring those feelings that you look for. And they will take some time. Hang tough. Now that you are a born again Satan will throw the book at you.

Dont worry - really - your baptism was valid. All heaven rejoiced when yuo were saved! FOR REAL!

Luk 15:7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Read Ephesians 2:8-10 you are saved by grace thru faith. Do you think there is anything you can do for God? Just the works he has for you to do in verse ten but that precludes you are saved by grace to begin with. Baptism isn't necessary for salvation becasue if there is a work you have to do to get unsaved then there is a work you have to do maintain or get resaved. If any man is in christ he is a new creature your not a revolving door. The hs is in you if you are saved. Baptism is making that decision a public declaration and holding you accountable to the decision you made privately and saying I am living for christ and I believe in the death burial and ressurection of Jesus christ and the gospel. Do you exhibit the traits of Galations 5 (fruits of the spirit) and what to dwell on is in Phil 4:8 that is part of your barometer of how well you are doing. the Holy spirit should be helping you with that. Once you are saved you are saved. You wll never go from that. you may have difficulties but God will be there directing and chastening. If you can completely walk away from God then I would have to question the veracity of your statement of faith.

Please stop looking at baptism by water as a reason to doubt. God isn't wanting your doubt, I think that He's more angry at those putting you up to it.

Let me try to help you.

Baptism is two things to me:
1) A enactment of the resurrection. The water being the earth, and the raising up out of the earth. Whether your eyes are open or not is not important.
2) You are announcing to the world that you belong to God and believe in the resurrection. By doing so you are now a part of God's kingdom, not a part of the world.

Whatever you do, do it with a clear mind, not just in water baptism.

NOW this is VERY important. Get the heck away from that church! If they cannot teach you faith, then they are not a good church to be in. They are useless, like salt that has lost it's savor.

Get into a Church that teaches you to trust God. Not with legalistic doubt, but with eyes set upon Christ.

I think that it is terrible that you had to go through that in doubt. I hope that what I said to you sinks in. I really really do.

Baptism does not acquire or make a contribution in the direction of your salvation. - Ephesians 2:8-9. Baptism declares a Christians's id with Jesus Christ with the aid of His death, burial, and resurrection - Romans 6:a million-5; Colossians 2:12.

I rejoice with you over your baptism. As soon as you were lowered into the water and raised, you have indeed joined Christ in death, burial and resurrection.
You have also openly demonstrated to the whole world that you have declared for Christ.
However, it is not important that you have any physical change as a result of your baptism, but be rest assured that the heaven is rejoicing over your step.
You do not need to do it again. It has nothing to do with your salvation. Just keep your faith in Christ and the Lord will give you grace to move on in your Christian life.
God bless you.
Chris

Though I do not think it is neccessary to be baptised to be a christian, I think it is a very important act in your spiritual walk with God. Baptism is just an outward response of what you are feeling inside. You are telling everyone that you are a christian and usually you get to tell your story thus strengthening other christians and witnessing to those there who have not accepted Christ. Don't let doubt that Satan is bringing to you affect your relationship with God. Being baptised is not a life shattering experience like believing in Jesus for the first time. It is perfectly normal to feel what you are feeling.

As far as baptism being required for salvation, I think Paul makes it pretty clear that is not the case in Ephesians.

Ephesians 2:8,9
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 1:13-14:
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.

When you come to faith in Jesus Christ you are given the Holy spirit to guide you in your walk.

And if you are still not convinced...
Romans 10:9-13
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."[e] For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Nowhere in Paul's steps to conversion is baptism a requirement.

I'm not going to get all theological on you here as some of my friend's say: She's gettin' all Jesified again!

I think that Baptism is a very special event for many reasons. I waited a long time to be Baptised. I was just recently baptized July 28th and I'm 27.

But most importantly Baptism is an outward sign of an inward condition. Did you feel moved by the Holy Spirit to want to start a new life? Did you want to start your life over without blemish just like a new born baby with God the Father as YOUR Father? Do you feel the pressing interior need to walk in His ways? Did you search for the Truth and find it in Christ Jesus?

Who of this world is to say if your baptism is valid? If YOU don't think that it was, then MAKE it valid. Pray (our only real means of communication with Him). Pick up that spiritual phone and call Him 911 "Jesus, my Jesus, I fall down in submission to you. I love you and want to follow in your ways. I want to join in that great everlasting feast with you which NO ONE will deny me, because You have promised it to me. NO ONE that comes to You will be turned away."
AMEN = I BELIEVE

OOops, well...maybe I did get a little Jesified on you...but it's all in love!

You don't need to be re-baptised...make the one that you did count!

Love ya... if you need anything at all...even just a word of encouragement to push through...write to me.

Baptism isn't a magic ceremony it is a committment. When you get married you probably don't "feel" any different to your wife but it is a symbol of your dedication to her. Baptism is like this, people sometimes receive spiritual gifts at baptism, others don't. The point is you have decided to serve Christ for the rest of your life and He will honour that. Baptism is just the prescribed way of publically declaring that.

I would question your reason for seeking baptism. If you were doing it to 'feel' something, that's not exactly right. Baptism is nothing more than an outward expression of your inward decision to follow Christ. If you were to 'feel' something, it would have been at conversion, not baptism.

If you were baptized yesterday, and you doubt it - that could just mean Satan is attacking the young believer in you. Keep praying and have faith that you are washed by the Blood of the Lamb.

The feeling after baptism is not necessary different. The difference you should of felt was the day or time you ask Jesus into your heart. As a babe in Christ your will grow. You have much to learn and much to feel. You should feel like you want to tell everyone about your experience and be happy about it. Don't be so worried. Get use to the "babe in Christ" now and grow each day as a Child of God in Jesus Christ.
