I read somewhere that the sense of smell, being most related to our brain stem, wherever that is, presumably the lowest point, where the 'stem' usually is, leaving the roots to their own devices, is the last to fail us when we take our leave of this mortal coil. Is that true?

I've never tested this, and I don't know anyone who has. It strikes me that this is one of those questions that is far easier to answer theoretically than practically (not so much the 'testing' part as the 'reporting your results' part..)
