It is not literally the image of man. It means that the image of God should like the image of man in His way of doing good things. The love of God to man is supposed to be the same. The charity, kindness and all other things which we can see from God should be the image of the man He has created. B ut man bacame cruel, want to be mighteir than God. dishonest and not believing God and all everything against God.
So God was disappointed making man supposed to be like the image of God.As a result He is imposing punishment to those who do not believe him and disobey his teachings. He has done all the things to show his love to man but man refuse to accept it so He have decided to end the world by giving reward to the rightious and punishing the sinners. to go to Hell to be burn with the lake of fire and the righteous ones will be retain with him in Heaven..

Regarding other species, it is written in the Bible God created other living things also, but it is not mentioned of whose image. God created man in His own image, this is mentioned in the Bible.

But if there was a God, imagine the uber-creativity He would have had to have to just create ONE species of beautiful butterfly, let alone all the other marvelous, wondrous, incredible, beautiful things on this planet. And we're slowly effing it all up. Go figure.

Meteors over millennia have not been able to destroy planet Earth ... but we humans will.

They weren't created in God's image. The animals and plants were given to us to take care of them and to learn from them lessons about life.
