I understand your Frustration I have the same thoughts being in the Army but they are right we are under civilian control and therefore we must change to what they are currently offended by.
No they will not ever understand the Military or the world we have seen and know to be the reality of the world. And I prefer they never do i didn’t join the Army so my friend and family back home would ever know anything about how violent the world is i would rather they just stayed in safe places and made sometimes asinine opinions.
btw and objective opinion on a matter in which you have no experience is just ignorant criticism I see your logic but its not complete like many things you cannot understand the military from a book it has to be experienced and then look at from the outside or else it could never be understood.

Mainly because the military in the US is controlled by the civilians. i have no problems with it as long as they keep to the things the military did wrong and not stick everything done wrong on the military and remember the good and right things the military does also. The problem is the press and intellectuals in the most part are extremely liberal and don't like the military so concentrate on what is done wrong instead of the whole picture-yes we have bad apples that do wrong but the rest are doing a lot more good which is forgotten or not reported on. I think I would match the numbers of military personnel cheating on tests against the cheating, teaching tests, and plagiarism going on on the public school and colleges any time they wanted too.

Most civilians don't know what it is like in the military and most don't want to know. That will always be the thing that annoys soldiers the most. Everyone will put there two cents in, since they have watched all the war movies in the world, they think they know what it is like. Simple thing is not many civilians know, but they think they know and will tell us what they think because that is what they do.
Now beating someones rank into them had it traditions, but time has changed things. Personally I have been blood ranked several times and as long as the people doing didn't go over board it was fine. But there is always a few that take things over board and break people up. There is a big difference between tradition and assault. I think that it there can be another way other than beating the crap out of someone. I have seen several different promotions, go several different ways and all have been professional and meaningful without blood ranking. Plus with the new ACUs it is alittle hard to draw blood with out breaking something.

In America the government works for the people. So the military is subservient to civilian authority. Every citizen has the right to voice their opinion no matter how ignorant. If we elect leaders who have military experience, who have demonstrated that they honor and respect military service, and who accept advice from military professionals, then it should work out.
Those of you who think it takes an outsiders view to police the military just don't get it. The military polices itself because it has to police itself. This is true of all professions: Lawyers, Doctors, Clergymen. What we do is deadly serious. We're highly trained. If you want to know when to go to war, don't take a f*kg vote - ask the experts.

Civilians will never understand. The military is a different world. We don't need people who think "objectively", we need people who have experience to decide what is best for the military.

People will still have opinions on the military whether they've served or not. Presumably you have beef with politicians even though you've never been in government, or think your schools should be run in a certain way even though you're not a teacher. Perhaps these people don't understand the military so well, but sometimes it takes an outside observer to see objectively.

In a democracy the civilians should be concerned with how their military is being used. Whether their concerns are justified or not is simply part of the debating process.

You're absolutely right! It's one thing to "armchair quarterback" a football game, it's something entirely different when you're dealing with life and death issues. I also believe the general public doesn't need to know much of what goes on - because they wouldn't understand it anyway. War is hell, after all.

"why do civilians think they know what's best for the military all the time."
Because sometimes those on the outside can see things that those on the inside cannot see. It's like one can't see the forest for the trees.
