People say that they are Christian (or anything else for that matter) because they are being on the safe side. Is it really possible to be on the safe side when there are multiple religious groups that claim that unless you follow their teachings, you will go to hell? This means that if you take the teachings of all religious groups into consideration, everyone will end up in hell. If you think about it, hell isn't the only thing involved, but that's my general idea.

Doesn't this mean that people who claim to be Christian just to be safe takes only Christian beliefs into consideration and nothing else?

I'm not questioning Christianity. I'm questioning the said excuse.

Thanks for all your answers so far. Just to let you know, I am aware of Pascal's Wager.

I would also like to rephrase one thing. I meant hell as in eternal suffering or damnation. I apologize for the misunderstanding. It's just stuck in my head that all forms of the underworld, eternal suffering, etc. are called hell. Now that I made that part clear, I'm sure you can see what I truly meant by everyone getting damned.

I'm thinking I'll put this up for voting...

There are different religions.........

The Christian Church/ Church or Christ do not claim to be THE only Christians, but we do claim to be Christian only.
If you following the teachings of Jesus, you will make it

Hear the word
Believe the word
admit that you sin
Repent of those sins
Be baptized
Live a faithful life

As a Christian, I think the whole philosophy behind Pascal's Wager is a hoax. And yes it means exactly that second paragraph of yours.

But, in its defense, Christianity is the only religion that believes that you go to HELL hell if you don't follow it. Many others believe:
--that we are reincarnated, having infinite chances to reach our ultimate goal;
--that we are rewarded for following but not punished for disobedience (we cease to exist);
--there are levels of heaven, and those that didn't follow go to a lower level of heaven;
--those who don't follow will be slaves in heaven for those who did follow.

So, even if Christianity is wrong and another religion is right, Christians still make out okay. Christianity is the only one that says that this is our one shot to avoid hell. So the argument has some merit on that point, but I have always felt that using the fear of hell above the blessings of salvation was the sign of a lazy Christian.

nope, it isnt see pascals wager. And they say just to be safe, that tells you that the only reason they even believe is for the rewards, if there was no heaven or hell, then they wouldn't believe in the non sense. So, they are just in it for the reward, not the good deeds or anything else.

America was founded on Christian beliefs, which were brought here for the European pioneers. That is why most people are Christian.
My great-grandparents were from Ireland, Norway, and Germany, and my Irish grandparents were very Catholic, and that is why I was raised with christian beliefs.
But, as I got older and read the bible over and over again, I read a lot of contraversial matters that were opposite of what I learned in my upbrining. I also learned the bible has a lot of contradictary readings. I started questioning the bible, and later believed that is all nonsense. I'm now atheist, and very happy now that I feel more clear and no longer thinking in "faery tales".
The bible was written at a time when people had no education, and they were very stupid. They were hopeless, and yearned for something better to come out of their miserable lives.

Religious herds r holding their sheep and encouraging others to join their herd. None in this herd know the path. They talk "ours is oldest herd, 2000 yrs before one sheep found the path and we formed a herd thereafter as that sheep would show us the path"

Truth is that only the sheep which is courageous to deflect from herd find the path. Thereafter Another herd is formed calling it follower of that another sheep. That's the way of religious world.

Its a wonderful play of God.

Of course not.

We have human remains from as long ago as 250,000 years. The New Testament is less than 2,000 years old. If there is a god then he is either clearly not the one of the New Testament or is indifferent enough to dismiss the lives of 248,000 years of humans.

None of it is logical. Thus, the double standard can't be explained logically. They're just scared people clinging onto a belief for security.

The best explanation I can come up with is that Christians of a particular denomination either grew up as that, or had family/friends that were that denomination.

Those who truly accept Pascal's Wager would worship and sacrifice to every god, goddess, demigod, demon, and hero ever devised by the mind of man JUST IN CASE!

I think Christians who say they are Christians just to be safe are not Christians. It is not safe to follow Christ. Anyone who claims otherwise, should try it themselves. But to know him personally, to experience his forgiveness, his love and his power in one's life makes it all worth the danger.
