There is a global movement to destroy the civilization that started in Greece about 500 BC and has seen its fullest expression in English speaking countries around the world. Those English speaking countries and their allies have banded together to defend this civilization from the most effective challenge since Communism, The alternative to fighting in Iraq now is to allow the spread of fascist theocracies and totalitarian autocracies around the world. These are not compatible with Democracy and will always cause conflict that cannot be resolved. Democracy will always be threatened by forces that want to control populations; likewise fascists and dictators will always be threatened by free trade and freedom of expression/religion.
Australia is already a good place to live thanks to the work of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Martin Luther, Aristotle, etc... The fighting in Iraq is intended to keep it so.

Australia and the US are allies. Australia agreed to help the US in the war in Iraq with support and troops. If you ever visit Iraq you could see that it was a hell hole to begin with and a hell hole now. Plus, if you aren't planning a visit to Iraq in the next ten years why do you care? How about worrying about your own hometown?
