I am 5'11 with a 30" inseam (according to my pants), and it seems like my bike puts a real strain on my lower back. I've even resorted to ape-hanger handlebars, but then the slightest breeze makes riding hell.

Typically 18 or 19". I am 5'10" and ride a 19".

However, you might want to try smaller. Here is what you need to do. Stand with you feet slightly apart, straddling the bike (Top bar between legs). You should have at least 2" clearance, although some people feel more comfortable with 4", between the top ;bar and the family jewels.

If you are happy with this, adjust the seat post so that, while sitting on the bike, your leg should extend fully with your heal on the peddle, at the lower revolution of the peddle stroke (This means that your leg would not be fully extended when riding on the balls of your feet). Once you have done this you should ensure that the seat post is within its safe maximum extension (About 3 - 4" should be into the post hole).

If you meet these criteria, then the frame is the right size. Note: although some larger people feel more comfortable with a larger frame, remember that you have to move this extra weight.
