Consciously seek out people who need something from you and give it to them. If someone is sad, smile at them. If an elderly person seems lonely, listen to their story. Let the person merging onto the highway in front of you. Let the person behind you in the grocery line who has only a few items get in front of you and your cartload of groceries. Pay the toll for the person behind you.

Always begin with the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It's not religion; it's practical--a proven moral philosophy. Balance your needs and wants with those of others around you. Be a builder, not one who tears down. Be an encourager rather than a discourager. Don't try to make the world perfect overnight, but always be one of the many who are ever working toward improving the world. Be kind, and try to make the best use of every hour you live.

I'll come back to see if you get the answer. I'd just like to be a happier person, that might happen if I were "better". What's it matter, you are doing all you can, and you've done all you could.
Edit: Evolving Monkey's suggestions sounds like it's the best so far.
Edit: Yeah, think FOR YOURSELF, practicing self control too, all good advice. Let reasoning, your highest mental abilities, rather than the gut urges.

You can make superficial changes to your behavior, but only God can fundamentally change you from the inside. Only God has the ability to cleanse your soul and create in you a clean heart.
Jesus said that we must be born again, born a second time - not our bodies, but our souls must be reborn as the presence of God enters in to us. God wants to mold you not just into his own image - he says "be holy, for I am holy" - and it is not up to you to work hard at being holy, to try and pray and fail and feel guilty! God has already provided reconciliation for you in the death of his son Jesus and he has already provided sufficient help for you by sending his Holy Spirit.
Please think on these things - God loves you and does not expect you to do all the work! He has provided all that you need :)

Sorry mate, but becoming a better person won't help you, it'll help others. Be good to your family, relatives, friends and to YOU. Forget the rest.

Do whatever you do it consciously. This is enough.
Not only you will become a better person, you will become a Buddha.

You can pray and if you are Christian then you can folloe the teachings of Christ in your daily life, or live by a good saying by Christ like " Why do you notice the stick in your brother's eye, when their is a log in your own?" , or " Judge and be Judged, Do not Judge and you too will bot be Judged! "
- Peace in Christ -
