Jekyll and Hyde, I'm telling you. She was always a good kid - kind, gentle, repsonsible, helpful. Now? It's gotten ugly around here. She's stealing (junk food, money, toys from her brothers), she's lying about the stealing as well as less significant things, and she's started dressing up A LOT. I mean lipgloss, jewelry, 3-5 outfits a day, and spending an hour in the bathroom in the morning.

As if that isn't enough, I talk to her about these things and she glares at me. Seriously. Come to think of it, she has been a little more emotional lately too. She says she stays up too late reading, and she's feeling whiny these days.

What is going on with her?

No, there is nothing going on in her life that I can identify. no divorce. No bullies. No bad influence friends. School's out for the summer. She's usually home with me all day, and her best friend practically lives here. She's not lonely.

Anybody have a 9 year old daughter that's kinda freaking you out a little?

Sounds like PMS to me. My daughter was like that every month for about a year before she actually started having periods. And no 9 is not too young. My niece turned 9 in February and started having her period in May. I would have a set time for lights out to make sure she's getting enough sleep. I told my daughter that she can feel cranky without taking it out on everyone around her. Easier said than done, of course. But now she has a journal and I think she just writes down all her complaints in there. But I don't read it so I don't really know!! Good luck.

What is her best friend like? I don't think there's any reason to have a 9 yr old wearing make-up except in a pretend way. Where is she getting the lipgloss and jewelry and all the outfits? I would gradually try and talk to her about things that matter more than how you look and what you wear. Like learning and caring and volunteering.

Welcome to puberty. My daughter is 8 and we are not anywhere near it thank God but her best friend who is two days younger is in early puberty. She is also very moody and cries a lot. But this is no excuse for stealing. You need to take action on that one. Punish and punish hard. Take away all her favourite things and anything else you feel will help and make her earn them back through respect and good behaviour. Puberty is not an excuse to let her get away with it

There must be something in her life that's creating this drastic change. It could be that school is starting up again. Keep an eye on her and don't let her get away with back talking! I think that she's just beginning to test the water. Be a good, firm, but loving parent who is involved in her life.

It sounds like she is starting to get pre menstral. Girls start going through the moody hormone changes about a year or so before they start their period. The stealing is somewhat more concerning than the other things.

Just make sure she understands that no matter how she feels she can always talk to you, and that you understand. Also, make sure she knows about periods and stuff, you don't want it to sneak up on her, that's scary.

My advice check out that best friend. It sounds to me that maybe your daughter might have had a sexual encounter. You may not want to hear it, but maybe you should ask her.

So take a step back and write down a list of her daily activities. Think about it, go down the list and ask her why she does these things.

I hope he gets the bottom of this, usually around nine they start to develop a personality, I am sure things will get better as they go on. I'm rooting for you and best of luck!
