My new puppy won't stop chasing my cat. I LOVE my cat and am feeling so guilty about bringing the new puppy in. Now my cat can't even get to her food, water, and litter box without being chased back upstairs! What should I do? I am trying to crate train the puppy for when we are not home but it really scares and saddens me to see my cat so frightened all the time. I'm also afraid of what would happen if the dog actually caught the cat. I sharply reprimand each time it happens and praise the puppy when he ignores the cat.

Your cat will adapt. While dogs make more noise and are faster, cats have sharp claws and can turn quickly. Your cat will soon realize that he is capable of terrorizing the dog & will come to rule your home.

First, put the cat food and water up on a table or on an upper shelf of a cat tree. The cat will be able to get it but the dog will not.

Second, check out electronic training devices. You can either use a remote control "zap" collar and every time the dog chases the cat you shock the dog. He will learn pretty fast to leave the cat alone. There may be one that works automatically but I am not sure. You put the "zap" collar on the dog and the trigger on the cat. (Works the same way as the electric dog fences.) Every time the dog gets within 3-5 feet of the cat, he gets shocked. Again, the dog will learn to stay away from the cat.

Third solution is to return the puppy. People who keep dogs in crates should not have dogs in the first place. Would you put your cat in a crate?

Either you or the cat is going to have to beat up the puppy. Preferably the cat.

If the cat isn't up to giving puppy the "leave me alone message",then you need to speak harsh words everytime it chases the cat. If words do not work, then a good slap or belt may be necessary. You could also try a ball hit (if you are a good shot). The puppy needs to associate chains the cat as being bad.

Unfortunately, puppies like playing in a rough and tumble way that just isn't done by cats,
