To talk to the Lord. To spend time with Him. To ask for forgiveness. To bring your concerns to the alter and leave them with the Lord asking for His will in your personal matters. To pray for others and family. To praise the Lord and tell Him you love Him! (Most important) Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

When a diamond is picked up in the rough it has little value until it has been cut and faceted allowing the light to show its true beauty. A stone cutter facets the stone to bring out its true worth by lovingly caressing the stone.
A human is picked up in the rough and also needs cutting and faceting to bring out the hidden beauty within. Prayer is the tool that is used by a human to facet the soul and allow the true beauty that is within to come to the surface, and radiate into the world. If the faceting is done properly with prayer, the gem created will be then called a prize that is, indeed, worthy of a "King".

Prayer has no function, I am atheist so I am allowed to question religion without fear of going to an imaginary place called hell.
Think about it this way, if God exists and he is supposed to have a divine plan that predetermines everything in the entire span of human existance, then how or why would praying for something change that. What if someone prays to God to save a dying child but God's plan is to have that child die, then what he's supposed to change his plan for that person?
People say it's God's will or he works in mysterious ways when bad things happen....when will people start taking responsibility for their actions?

a prayer, at best, will ensure you get what you worked for. it really serves no provable purpose, but, it would be silly to think of a prayer to get us what we want, when we know we didn't work hard enough for it. it's just a psychological boost. you've studied a whole week for an exam, 7 hours a day, and you're 100 percent confident. but, because the exam is so important, you want to do everything possible to do well. so, you resort to extreme measures, like praying. it works just like a drug. provides a quick high and then relaxes you. you feel confident going into the exam because now you've really done everything.
so, pray on god lovers. pray on. (get it, from that febreeze commercial, i think. "spray on freshness lovers. spray on. see what i did there)

Prayer to God is not functioning but can be recited when you ask help from God.

According to famous theologian C.S. Lewis, prayer is designed to change our minds, not God's. I think beyond that it is a way to be in contact with the Creator. Every relationship needs some sort of communication, including created/Creator. I enjoy telling God about my day (even though He already knows), what I like and don't like, whats going through my head, telling Him jokes... so on and so forth.

When you need advice or help from your earthly father, if he is still alive and reachable, you go to him, or call or write to him. Prayer is the method by which we are able to ask for help or advice from our Heavenly Father. We can also use prayer to acknowledge our love and respect for our Heavenly Father, which we should do frequently just like we should, or wish we could, do the same for our earthly father.

I have prayed before about a guy that was a really, really bad guy and 3 months later I found out he died. Diabetic coma. Kind weird since he was so in into his health and body building. Anyway, it really freaked me out but I supposed that he was far worse than I thought. God let Satan have him. Good riddens.

This link may help you come to some understanding.
Here's an exerpt:
""Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God."[Catholic Catechism]"
The earlier quote attributed to CS Lewis is actually attributable to Soren Kierkegaard.

Prayer rectifies the mind... it may do other things, but it certainly can rectify and thus clarify your mind....
