Military people do drink alot, usually after a long deployment.
But the military discourages irresponsible drinking. DUIs are punished severely.

When I was in the Navy, I drank to unwind after long underway periods. Sometimes, my shipmates and I got carried away.

Still we were not as bad a quite a few college students I have seen when I went to school. Sailors drank to unwind, college kids drink to show off.

Must have missed that part of military culture. i was in the Navy a quarter of a century. I don't drink. I know some who might have wine with dinner. I know a few who might occasionally have a beer with the guys. Most guys in the service are responsible drinkers. They get in trouble if they are not.

A few months ago I was talking to a guy on the internet. He was really down on the military. After a few conversations I found out why. He'd gotten drunk and fell asleep on watch. He was getting booted out and was upset because he couldn't get a flight because of the number of soldiers going to and returning from Iraq occupied the available seats. There are those too. Sots.

You go to a bar and see a dozen guys maybe two dozen from the local base bending their elbows. The base may have 5,000 personnel. And you're judging them all because of a few? I stood shore patrol on a few occasions. A few got sloshed and disorderly, and had to be hauled back to the ship in a "cattle truck." But a few hundred were ashore. Can't judge the actions of all sailors, or any branch, by the actions of a few.

But, "more than the general public"? Every year you hear of a few college students drinking themselves to death. How often do you hear of military men or women doing that? Every year thousands of drunken civilians get behind the wheel of a car and kill themselves or others. How often do you hear that of somebody in the military?

The only thing that I am grateful is that you are not part of the military structure. What is the basis for your claims concerning military people and alcohol? By the way ,my uneducated in proper spelling friend. note how to spell alcohol. How many military people do you associate with in order to make your dumb statement contained your question?
Cite the polls you have read that begin to compare drinking among military personnel to that of the "general public." What, say you, no real definite research available. Thought not.
I wasted enough time on the likes of you. Sig Heil.

I don't think that your average 21 year old person in the military drinks any more than a 21 year old who is college.

We seem to? It looks to me that that's how you view the world, so you perceive the military to drink more than the general public. I happen to drink far less than many civilians I've seen in the last four and a half years.

Try being deployed without alcohol for 15 months. Do you think they drink more than college students? There is no proof to your statement. I guarantee it is equal for both military and civilian.

really? you think so? try living on the military base i live in....i see people drinking....when they are having BBQ's. didn't know that would be considered "drinking too much." but i'm sure it's just ignorant people like you who think that way about our military anyway. have you been in the military before? is that why you think that way?

That's the way it is in the military. The Military people work 60 or more hours a week so they drink to forget. Plus many homely women on base and the drinks make them look better.

I don't know if that is a fact or not but if it is, I would say they have a good reason. Especially the ones that have been in battle.
