It could either be a phobia of the dark, or possibly from a past trauma in ones life that is only in your subconscious and that you may not remember happening until you dig into the subconscious. I would recommend if it continues and your paranoid thinking or anxiety increase seek some professional help.

I do the same thing, but it was much worse a few years ago and I ended up laying on the couch watching tv until the sun came up then i could finnaly go to sleep, it was horrible, and it took a lontg time to break that habbit. finnaly I was able to sleep in my bed but I have to have my fan on to make noise so I wont lay there and listen to everything. I think it takes time to get over fears like that. Maybe it will help when you become more comfortable in your house and you feel safer or when you get better at assuring yourself that ther is nothing to be afraid of. :)
(if you were smoking weed you might be able able to sleep better?) just kidding :)
(I dont think you should smoke pot)

Consider ending your evening on the couch, under a blanket, with the TV on............for the night.
There is less of an "alone" feeling, and you'll be less likely to hear "house noises" in the night.
Sometimes the ritual of locking the doors, checking the stove, and turning off the lights can bring on the scary feelings and thoughts. So, if you "break" the ritual, you may be able to skip the aftermath.

I have the same problem. Every single pop or sound will make me think that something is out there with a gun. I always over react and last night i heard a huge pop sound and was under my covers thinking i was about to die and i was cursing saying i forgot to write a will. I can totally relate. I think i have a fear of the dark or i have seen to many horror movies. Whatever the problem it takes forever to go to sleep.

What can help is try sitting on a settee, absolutely still. Wrap a blanket around you, and just sit very still for around 20mins, then quietly walk to the bedroom. That should help you relax before sleeping.
You may be going through a hormone change (men get them around 40) where certain hormone levels drop. It will pass in time.
Avoid caffeine, and drugs.

Could be alot of things from very simple to complex. If you cant figure it out you need to find a way to comfort yourself so you know that you are safe.
