i have very very bad insomnia . it takes me , on average , about 2 or 3 hours to fall asleep . when i do fall asleep , i wake up often and don't get quality sleep . i get probably between 2- 5 hours of sleep every night . i was prescribed sleeping pills by my doctor; they slightly improved my ability to fall asleep, but then stopped working completely. i have tried warm milk, no caffeine after noon , no working out before 5 pm , no eating after dinner, reading before bed , hot bath , essential oils, meditation, sleeping with music , sleeping without music , sleeping with lights , sleeping in pitch black .. i have tried everything and am still having this problem. even OTC sleeping pills have not work, and neither have the new ones i have been prescribed . what could be the problem and how can i fix this ? i have missed days and days of work because of sicknesses from lack of sleep ..

Like the previous post said, if you're 12 and you already have such severe problems, then you need to see a sleep specialist. Perhaps it's a more serious sleep disorder than just regular teenager sleeplessness. Plus you may need counseling to help you deal with your anxiety regarding sleep. Do you have other neurological problems? If you do, then a neurologist (brain specialist) may be able to help better than a regular doctor. Your doctor would be able to recommend a sleep specialist who can do some studies to see why it's so bad and then recommend a more reasonable course of treatment.

I think the link is working now. Wasn't working before for some reason.

If the prescription strength pills are not working you need to tell your Dr and ask him to send you to have a sleep study done. When it is disrupting your life this much, you need to get it fixed. A sleep study (they monitor your functions, brain, heart, breathing, etc while you sleep in one of their rooms overnight) should uncover your problems. If not do not give up, keep your Doctors working on you until they find out what or why and treat it. Lack of sleep as you know causes a lot more problems than sleepiness. Good luck!

I can't say why nothing works. I have been having problems for 7 years, possibly because of anxiety with health issues. Anyway, a doctor recently suggested that I try Tylenol PM and I find that helpful. I have had others tell me the sleepy agent in the Tylenol is what is in Benadryl and that you can take Benadryl to sleep. I was told not to take more than 100 mg when I take it.

I have the same problem........has your doctor prescribed Seraquel? I take that and it knocks me out in like 10 mins.

Like you, I built up tolerance with the pills and such that I had taken in the past, this really works for me.

I dont smoke pot anymore....so no offense on what I am about to say, but smoking pot might also help u sleep too; but Im not trying to condone it either. You can probably get a medicinal card to legal be able to smoke it as meds.

I am wondering your age and your health problems, if any. You know sometimes we say to ourselves that we are not worried or not thinking about anything that is bothering us but in the back of our mind it is there and we are not fully aware of it. And most of the time it is keeping us awake. I have had insomnia for years. I have fibromyalgia and have suffered with insomnia from that. I am on 3 types of meds. and still can't sleep some nights. My suggestion to you is to go back to your doctor and talk to him/her about your problem and see if something else can be worked out for you. I sure hope so because I know exactly how you feel

Good luck and happy counting ( of sheep)!

One of the many reasons people can not fall to sleep easily is their brain do not get enough Oxygen. It will be dangerous to fall to sleep and further slow down heart and lung function; that is why their body would not let them fall to sleep easily. Many people’s neck and shoulder muscles are too tight due to over exercise, stress, or working condition and do not have good blood circulation to bring enough Oxygen for brain. Try not to eat or heavy work out before bed time; your blood only can work either for brain, or stomach, not the whole body. You can massage neck, shoulder, head, and face by yourself or by somebody. Warm bath and massage are very good for this and you can breathe slowly and deeply before sleep.

Some of us just can't get the sleep we need. I have been taking a muscle relaxant for years. Otherwise, I would not sleep.

what's keeping you awake? are you worried about money or about what you need to get done tomorrow? try keeping a notepad by your bed and writing everything you need to get done tomorrow down and getting it out of your mind. if this doesn't seem to help, you could try going to therapy and seeing if there's something deep down that's keeping you awake, something bothering you that you're not even aware of. or you could try a hypnotherapist...
