You can't load the XP OS from within Vista. The OS will tell you that a newer OS is installed. What you need to do is boot your system with the XP CD and install a fresh copy. I'd recommend deleting your current C drive partition and recreating to install over it.
Make sure you have all the hardware drivers before you do the install. Nothing worse than finding your network driver isn't part of the Windows OS media.

Back up all your personal data and save it to cdrom.. Then put the xpdisk in your cd rom. reboot your computer. If it says hit key to boot from cd ... hit a key... it will load the set up program for xp. When it ask you the option repair or new installation say new installation. When it ask you if you want to reformat say yes... it will erase the drive and reload xp. You will lose all your personal data, programs etc and they will have to be reloaded later from your backups and original program disks.
If you can't get it to recognize the windows xp disk in the cdrom when it goes to reboot and it boots to vista instead you will have to reboot... and hit esc or delete or f1 or whatever it says to enter cmos setup and enter that program and find where you change the boot up order .. change it from booting from c or hard drive , to cdrom first then be sure and save your settings.. When it reboots it should look at the cdrom drive first... go to the above and follow instructions.

You will have to reformat your computer to revert back to XP from Vista.
Suggestion to save your data to an external storage device and then reformat and start from scratch
Hope this helps
