I don't understand why we have to send law abiding citizens to war, whether they be volunteer or drafted.

Why don't we let prisoners do this for us instead? They'd probably also appreciate the opportunity to achieve something important and useful while serving their time

in some ways i do agree with you. it could give some of the criminals with less serious charges to be given a 2nd chance. i mean in WW2 they did it a few times. they even made a movie about it called The Dirty Dozen. but there are some criminals that i wouldnt trust my life with.

I don't think any criminal should be locked up for years or sentenced for life, instead the U.S. should build 1 gigantic prison and send every criminal in every state in the U.S. to it. The punishment would be to send the prisoner to war since they didn't want to act civilized and the only way they would get a second chance in society again is if GOD allows them to survive the war to get a second chance. If this were to happen which I know it won't but if people would take out time to think of these kind of ideas crimes, rapes, murder, would be history or rare.Because it would scare most people straight. Prisons today in this generation are jokes they make it to easy on criminals and some do time and get out and go right back in prison because they have it so easy in prison, if they had to actually face reality they would never think about doing any crime ever or ever again because it would be death or life not sentenced to life or years.

Lotsa knee jerk replies here...but as a concept, an excellent idea and one I've pondered for years. This can be done effectively an possibly save the lives of our highly trained, well disciplined troops. First, you DO NOT mix the criminals with regular recruits. Second, send them to do the dirty work, bomb disposal, septic pumping, general grunt work and dangerous recon missions that normal recruits would rather not do. Finally, ALWAYS back them up with a sniper level commander in the rear who can take them out if they decide to screw up. That or a C4 loaded collar and remote control. Fully expendable. After all, murder's and soldiers are basically the same - killing machines.

Would you want you life dependent upon someone who is not law abiding. Enemies to the front and enemies to the rear. This war is screwed up enough without sending criminals. To fight a war you need discipline and courage, most of the criminals I have had in contact with as a correction officer have none of these.

First of all, what level of prisoners are you talking about? Homicidal, Sex Offenders? Who?

It's just a bad idea all around......The reason that people are criminals is because they couldn't assimilate into mainstream society, and we have to assume that if they couldn't assimilate there, then most likely they wouldn't be able to assimilate to a society with higher standards. Try not to take any offense when I say this......But do you truly think that the military is easy?....It doesn't just take muscles, but intelligence and discipline is also extremely essential. We can't trust this job to people who we couldn't even trust to be loitering in our own neighborhoods.

I hope that this has helped you.

You don't understand why we don't send prisoners to war.

Picture this. You are in Iraq. You have been there for six months. You are tired. You know there are 100,000 enemy out there who want you dead, and who are willing to die to get you that way. Behind you you have a convicted felon who is only there because his only other option is a 20-year hitch in a cell. He's armed with the latest weaponry available. Would your attention be focused in front of you?

Likely that those in the military control are leary to develop such a program because of lack of trustworthliness on the part of the prisoners , soldiers have to be trusted to obey orders and acomplish the tasks they are given. For the prisoner it would be a way to get out of prison ,their superiors would have to trust them therefore to some extent depend upon them that would be questionable for prisoners. I believe that war is wrong for all people , i was just trying to answer your question. thanks, comingonthrusthename

Haven't thought this question out too good have you. PRISONS are full of low life's because most of them are the COP OUT'S of our society and the IRRESPONSIBLE. How do you think they would BE if given the chance to SERVE in a war to lessen their sentences or be given amnesty ? Would they "do" it ? Most would ESCAPE "this" responsibility just like they have escaped being productive members of society.........
