Very stubborn breed-not easy to train or housebreak.

Also, remember the grooming they need.

Yes, absolutely!

I adopted a senior 8 pound yorkie from a shelter. He was the best dog that I have ever owned. He was quiet, calm, smart, easy to train.

He did have some health problems (I bet he was originally a puppy mill dog)-- his teeth had to be professionally cleaned by the vet every year... but that is common with small dogs.

Also he had a skin condition and needed to always be on a steroid called Medriol. So his health wasn't 100%, but again, he probably didn't come from a reputable breeder.

But his personality was the best.

(I didn't get another yorkie though when he passed away because I couldn't bear to be reminded of him in that way.)

mm i know alot about dogs....
you should read this...
they HAVE EXTREM health problems

Some Yorkies are prone to bronchitis and early tooth decay, poor tolerance of anaesthetic, and delicate digestion. Exotic treats should be avoided. They sometimes suffer paralysis in the hindquarters caused by herniated disks and other problems of the spine. Falls or knocks can cause fractures of fragile bones. Abnormal skull formations in Yorkies measuring less then 8 inches (20cm). Bitches often have trouble delivering. The very tiny "teacup" Yorkies often have serious health and behavioral problems. Be sure to feed Yorkies dry food (canned food can be added) to help keep their teeth clean and strong. They should get their teeth cleaned at the Vet to keep them from falling out and creating infection.

I've had many dogs in my life and my yorkie is the best dog EVER. I've had big dogs, medium dogs...but this breed is one of a kind. I can't imagine having any other kind of dog. Her disposition is so happy..all the time. She's 7 years old now and during that time never snapped or nipped once. She's just a sweet, loving dog. I've heard from other yorkie owners that they have had the same luck. It's just the breed of the dog. If you're thinking about getting one, I would definitely say 'do it'.

It depends on how you define good.

Are they difficult to train and housebreak? Yes.

Do they need daily grooming? Yes

Are they yappy? Yes

Do they demand lots of attention? Yes

Do they breed easily? NO

Do they make good mothers? No

Are they sweet, affectionate, loveable, and beautiful? Most emphaticlly yes!!!

I've had five Yorkies over the years. One died from complication of giving birth to a litter. One of the pups had to be put down due to birth defects. My first wife ended up with surviving pup. One was more stubborn than I was and was given away. And my last one died of Cushings Disease.

When our big girl passes, we will get another Yorkie.

They are lovable and loyal members of your family, well worth the bother of raising them.

i have one. i love it soo much. its very hyper but soo cute! they dont train easily but what i do is put one of those puppy pads and it goes on that. or i let it outside in my fenced yard. ive had it for about 2 years and it is trained to go outside or on the puppy pad. they like to chew on my things like if i have something on the floor it will chew it up, but it grows out of that

pros
~~~~
they are cute
small
cons (in general)
~~~~~~~~~~~~
hard to house break
easily spoiled
yappy
dont like strangers
stick to one person (not a family dog)
long hair (grooming)

But I think their cuteness over powers the cons :)
