Unless your game requires DirectX 10 (not many do yet) I'd stick with XP. If you are building a computer though, I'd try to build it so that it is compatible with Vista so you can upgrade in the future if you need to.

For now, more software is supported on XP. Many of them will run on Vista, but won't necessarily be vendor supported on Vista.

Well Windows XP professional and Vista offers a new program called Virtual machine you can read about it here. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx I'm a PC adventure gamer and like occasionally pulling a older game out to play. And sometimes the game will refuse to work on WinXP. So I installed this Virtual Machine that allowed me to install Win98 to play older games that just won't work on newer Os's.

Xp because Vista takes to much ram which may slow down your gaming experience!

XP because Vista is resource hungry and not many games are compatible with it anyway yet.

Xp pro for sure, better driver support for your hardware, more memory available for the game...
