1. He is over confident that he can take Ponce De Leon's best punch. He based that from Ponce de Leon's last fight with Gerry Peñalosa. De Leon never hurt Gerry, but Gerry is a veteran compared to this young & cocky Bautista. Gerry got the defense that Rey never had. Many considered Gerry as the Pinoy world champ with the best defense.
2. He didn't listen to his corner, he met Ponce De Leon head-on which is a very big mistake. His eagerness to mix-it-up early is his wrongdoings. During his previous fight, Bautista have shown brittleness in his legs and a suspect chin when he was hurt and almost went down. I think De Leon take note of that, Bautista is a goner if he is hit hard.
3. Underestimated the heart, experience and power of De Leon. The Mexican is a proven veteran and got power in both hands (28 KO out of his 31 wins). He wants to end the fight early by trying to hit the champ with a knockout punch that didn't come as he was the one counted-out in the very 1st round.
He is still young, i still want him to be a champion someday but first, he must learn how to mix-it-up and run or hold if necessary. He got lessons to learn including a better defense.

First of all, he faced a motivated, strong, puncher with experience. Second, Bautista is just 21 years old and might have been caught up in the moment. No shame in Bautista's effort just as long as he learns from this experience and bounces back. He is going to be better for it down the road and expect to see him a little more seasoned for a chance at another world title. But all respects to Ponce, great fight!

Before this fight, Boom Boom was fighting nobodies compared to Ponce de Leon and I believe that he was rushed to this fight and his progression of opponents didn't go smoothly. I just hope he learns from this fight and gain his confidence back. This sport is all about timing and it wasn't his time yet. I am sure he will get more opportunities in the future for this young boxer. Mabuhay ang mga Pinoy!

I would say he underestimated ponce de leon's power due to his last fight agains penalosa... there was also a commentary by lenox lewis that he didn't warm up enough b4 the fight, that makes a fighter more voulnerable... but that's all assumptions, the fact is that
Ponce de leon pwd him big time
