Best advice I have for you, is back up all of your data and then do a fresh install of WindowsXP Home.
Make sure your Cdrom is set as the 1st boot device in your bios sequence settings and place the hard drive as the 2nd boot device.
Throw the WindowsXP Home cd into the Cdrom and restart your computer. Follow the onscreen directions for a fresh install of Windows. The WindowsXP Home cd will format and install automatically.
During the process of the install, after Windows has loaded the setup files onto the hard drive, you will be prompted with a count down screen telling you that Windows wants to reboot the computer in X amount of seconds. At this point, this is when you will open up the CDRom drive and pull out the WindowsXP Home CD and then let the machine reboot.
The reason for doing this, is because sometimes if you do not remove the cd from the cdrom, the computer will restart and you will be back at square #1 and sit there and wonder what the heck is going on.
After the computer restarts you "Might" be asked again to insert the WindowsXP Home cd to complete the install, this is when you will put the cd disk back into the cdrom. If you're not asked, then leave the cd out of the cdrom. After you get Windows installed, make sure to go back into your bios and re-set the boot order for 1st boot device Hard drive (IDE-0) and the 2nd boot device : Cdrom.
Good Luck

While you can upgrade from Home to Pro the reverse is not true. You'll have to install Home fresh nito it's own directory.
To the other poster saying that Home sux: XP Home and Pro are exactly the same code base. The Pro version adds a few features that a home user would likely never use or even miss.

You will have to do what's called a clean install of Windows. This will involve re-installing the entire operating system. If you can, get a licensed copy of XP Pro or purchase a product key from Microsoft to validate your copy.
