If a cat has been separated from its mother for several years since it was given a new home at the age of 6-8 months old, will the mother and its now grown offspring recognize each other if they are reunited, or will they not recognize each other at all? Is a kitten (that is separated from the mother) too young to form a memory of its mother?

I've always wondered about this.

In the wild, cats are generally solitary animals. Any offspring eventually becomes competition once they reach or approach maturity. This changes the relationship from mother-offspring, to adult-adult. The maternal relationship disappears once the kittens are no longer dependent on their mother, and it is replaced, in the domestic environment, with either cats that act as friends, right through to cats that don't get along at all. It depends on the individual.
In your case, the mother cat will not recognise the younger cat as either her offspring, or even as a cat that she knows. It will be the same for the younger cat. They would need to be introduced as strangers.

If they do recognize each other, it really won't matter. If they're of the same sex, they're competition. If they're of opposite sexes, they're still being stressed by the sudden reappearance of the other cat. Either way, they'rell be some hissing, spitting and claws flying, very likely!

this is an illustration that she left her mom too early. whilst she does this, grab her by ability of the nape of her neck and growl into her face, as her mom might have finished if she grow to be misbehaiving.
