i don't think so, having a cell phone should be given at the time when a child is already responsible enough for her own things OR if she really needs it. i don't think a 6 year old would need a cellphone though. a 6 year old would usually be in school or at home or be playing with a friend just in the neigborhood where they can easily call their parents because the telephone is easily accessible in those places. i'd say teenagers need cellphones 'cause we teens go out more and need to contact our parents when we'll be back home or something

I doubt the 11 year old was using a credit card. A credit card is a financial contract, and an 11 year old can't enter into a financial contract. Even if it was in their parents name, the parent would have to be there to sign and show ID. It was most likely something like a Visa gift cards. Both my kids get them for birthdays and Christmas. It's a great way for them to see the limits their money goes and teaches them financial responsibility. They can't go over the limit of the card and so they have to plan how they'll spend it. Regarding cell phones. My youngest got one of the parent/911 only phones at 8 because her dad and I had joint custody, and live about 40 miles for each other. It helped her feel better if she wanted to talk to the other parent if she wanted to. She's getting her first 'real' cell phone next week. It's got an MP3 player, so that's what she is more interested in, than the phone part. As for a 6 year old? I can't imagine any time when a 6 year should not be under the direct supervision of an adult, so needing a phone that young, is a bit ludicrous.

6? That's way too young to have a cell phone! I didn't get a cell phone until I was 17 - and that was mainly because I got my lisence.
Both 6 and 9 are young. The youth of today need to be taught that there are better things to do then talk on the phone. If the parent is concerned about when their child is away from home - Disney makes a GREAT phone for younger kids - where you can control their minutes. You can program when the child is allowed to use the phone (i.e. if you want your child to only use the phone from 5pm-7pm and no other time, you can go online and program it that it can only be used during that time). If the child is grounded, then you can take their minutes away, etc. The phone has a sorta GPS thing, where you can go online and locate where your child is at. All around - Disney did a great job when they put together the phone plan that they have. Awesome idea!

No that is way to young to have a cell phone. Plus you never know if they accidently borrow the cell phone to a friend. How does a six year old really know how to use a cell phone. Most of them probably would punch the wrong buttons and talk to strangers. All a six year old really does is does to school and goes over to friends houses. But it's the parents that set up the play dates and schools don't allow cell phones. I'd say a good age would be 12 or 13 years old to start out with a cell phone. When your younger nothing goes on to much that you need a phone but as you get older it can get more demanding that in order to live to need a phone at all times well at least to make life easier. Young kids don't have much going on in their lives so why do they need a cell phone now? To me because of that; it's a waste of money. But it's only my opinion though.

ok, first off a 6 year old should not be going anywhere alone to need a cell phone. As for the 9 year old, I's still say no. My daughter got a trac fone when she was 12, only because when her and her friends would go for a walk we /she could check in. Let them be kids!

no!!! if a kid needs a cell phone at that age then the parents arent doing their job...where the heck is your child going to go that they will need a cell phone...i dont even get why any kid 12 or under needs a cell phone....it is a parents responsibly to know where and who their child is with all times ...so that would completely diminish the need for a child to have a cell phone... kids at that age shouldnt be roaming the streets....and if they are playing at a friends house i am confident that there is a phone there that they can use if they need to call someone to pick them up

That is crazy. They are way to young to have a cell phone. Although I have seen this phone that is for young children. The phone is for emergencies only. The child has a few people(emergency contacts) programmed into the phone to call should they need them and of course the 911.

not a cell phone but firefly phone (I think that's the name of it) you (the parent) can program 4-5 phone numbers into it and that's it, good for emergencies or if your child gets lost or if you need to contact her. But even 6 is a bit young as she should be with you or at school most of the time. perhaps when she starts doing things away from you or going out alone with friends like about age 10.
