Or could you describe their mental state BEFORE you teach them to believe in god in any other way?

No. In Islam we are taught that all babies are born in a state of Al Fitrah or belief in one God(ALLAH). Before the child is put in the mother's womb then the child stands before ALLAH(SWT) in Jinnah and therefore learns of ALLAH(SWT) before it is born. It is the parents who make the child a Jew, Muslim, Christan or other religion but the religion for all mankind is Islam which is the religion chosen by ALLAH(SWT). It was not founded by Muhammad(PBUH*) or any other man alive. So when Muslims use the word "revert" instead of "convert" they mean that you are reverting or coming back to the natural religion.

As I understand it, Athiests resist the idea of God - and often times they seem to reject the traditional personification of God but retain a belief of some kind of energy (if not sentient) that powers this existence. Further, Athiests are characterized as believing in Science and evolution. Since babies are not capable of resisting an idea they can not yet comprehend nor can they grasps the concepts of science or evolution, I would have to say no - babies are not born Athiest.

If you are looking for a label for these precious little darlings, I would say Agnostic fits better or perhaps a more traditional definition of Pagan - which is listed in dictionary.com as also meaning anyone who is not Christian, Jewish or Muslim. Interesting to learn is that the original definition of suffering was "to undergo" - it is us who has added the feeling that the undergoing is work or in some other way uncomfortable.

As to the original "religion" or mental state of babies, as pertains to this question - I would say that I see God as an energy (whatever it is that makes grass grow and humans breath) and if God is an ocean we are all glasses of God. From that perspective, I would say that babies are as close as we get to being in both worlds - fresh off the energy presses, as it were - and therefore have no questions that need answering and so have no need for any of the answers we have put into the tools we call religion. I would call them religion free. It's amazing what kids will tell you (with no previous information) about God (like what God looks like) and where they were before they came to mommy and daddy. Try it.

Peace!

I've done this point before but it got violated so too bad I can't just copy and paste it. WHO Cares if God exists. It still doesn't mean there is a God that tells us to worship him or one that says homosexuals ought to go to hell, or even if there IS a heaven and a hell, which is even MORE stupid to try to prove, and a whole bunch of other krappola which aren't even remotely possible. As an agnostic, there MAY be a God, because as humans, we tend to be Gods to the cellphone, the ipod, whatever, you know? Lol and I think that if there WAs a God, they would have just shaped us together, like we shape cellphones/ipods together. So in the end this whole argument of God existing or not isn't worth a faeces. If they wanna prove everything to us to turn us Christian, they gotta prove EVERYTHING in the bible. I don't see no God anywhere pointing at us or whispering to us, he might even be DEAD for all we know.

I happen to believe that all babies are innocent and wise, until taught otherwise. I believe in universal consciousness and think that babies have all the answers of the universe tucked into their little minds until we adults successfully teach them that they are ignorant. To say they are atheists...maybe, but maybe they know a Truth that we could not possibly ever understand.

Since you are still a child I guess you truly believe that babies are atheist. You 100% incorrect. You need to grow up. You maturity lvl like most of the atheists on this forum is below standard. The idea of a supreme being is ingrained within all of us. God made it that way. A child would assign "God did it" "or a great spirit" or "a great magician" to anything their parents wouldn't explain to them.

I'm not sure. Atheists tend to know others believe in a god while babies have no idea, and so, cannot be the opposite of anything. If you follow my drift. They're just babies.

Athiest isn't the right term, they are unknowing. However, I think we are all born with some drive to head a certain direction. That is why some turn away from religion or create their own religion. We all want to believe there is something better out there whether it be a God, self-fullfillment, or enlightment.

True... all infants are born agnostic/atheist... no knowledge... no beliefs. they only become christians, moslems, hindus, etc. following that peculiar form of mental and psychological abuse which we call 'religious indoctrination', wherein they are brainwashed into believing that the ILLUSION of knowledge is superior to ACTUAL knowledge.... and that willful ignorance, gullibility and self-delusion are virtues.

I see that it is necessary to correct some misconceptions... atheism is defined as the ABSENSE of belief in invisible, magical, supernatural sky-fairies (gods)... not a DISBELIEF in them. Of course, there is a SMALL percentage of atheists (atheist because they DO NOT BELIEVE in gods) who actually BELIEVE that gods do not exist... but that position is just as logically untenable as the belief that gods DO exist. Such people QUALIFY as atheists... but their position does not DEFINE atheism.

Since newborn infants do not BELIEVE in god(s), they satisfy the definition of atheist. Also, since they have no knowledge of god, they qualify as agnostic, as well.

I would say they are agnostic or neutral.

Atheism is a disbelief in God. If someone cannot comprehend what something he cannot be said to believe or disbelieve in it.

Babies have no sense of right or wrong, Good or Bad, God or no God... Babies are athiests before they are taught about God
But if you're going to say "why does God let babies go to hell because they're athiests?" he doesn't. Children have no sense of right or wrong so have had no real chance to choose, therefore if they die before they grow old enough to make a decision they are automatically going to go to God and he will let them decide up there.

If you weren't going to say that then my apologies

God Bless
