The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony can be it's own self-contained service. But it can also be performed within a Catholic mass. The mass, of course, entails reception of Communion.
Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, every Holy Sacrament can be incorporated into a mass or received in it's own ceremony.

The concept is from the beginning of time, when GOD, before man's sin, brought the woman to her man physically. That Communion was lost through sin, but is restored through the Sacrifice of JESUS, and the Eucharist is the Meal of that Cure, the Antidote to the forbidden fruit Eve, then Adam went on to eat through forgetting GOD. The moment the woman longed to do what was forbidden by the ONE that made male and female, she seduced her husband into what was evil, and the moment he followed his own kind rather than choose GOD above her, he died spiritually, as she also did, and their union was broken, and their bond weakened, so that the man blamed the woman for his sin. It is GOD that is the FOUNDATION of True Marriage, and without HIM that Threefold Chord cannot exist.
Non-Catholic weddings are newer ideas, where they are said to be Christian.

I agree with the above responder, but let me add some more info....Holy Communion (we believe it is the literal body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ under the appearance of bread and wine) is a great wedding ceremony, because Jesus (the groom) and the Catholic-believer (the bride) come together to make one flesh in order to produce fruit--which is faith, rightousness, etc. In the same way, the man and the woman become one body and produce fruit--children in the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. God bless.
