Naming Your Puppy

Image:
The name you choose says as much about you as it does about your dog. It shows how you view your dog and your relationship with it. Some names can cause people to judge a dog and react positively or negatively/fearfully when meeting it. Depending on whether the dog is a pet, therapy dog, search & rescue dog, tracking dog or any other dog that works with the public, it is important to use a name that conveys the proper image. Happy searching!

Popularity:
The most popular dog name in North America is Sam, Sammie or Samantha (which means "listener"). The second most popular is Max, Maxie, Maxwell or Maxine (which means "the greatest" in Latin). Third is Lady, followed by Bear, Maggie, Buddy, Tasha, Chelsea (or Chelsie), Holly and Shasta. Other very popular names are Brandy, Ginger and Taffy.

Took my dog Lexie in for shots Saturday, and once again, "Uncle Harold" was boarding in the back room, barking up a storm. Too funny when the vet mentioned "Uncle Harold" was back there again!

A good name is one that fits the personality/color/gender/size. So hard to know if your sweet young pup is a Gizmo, Bebop, Schister, Jazzbo, Sparky, or Tiddlywinks...

Have some fun and think about if you shorten it up when using just a first syllable of the name. With my present dog Lexie, the shortened version "Lex", is something I like, too.

Good luck and let us know what you decide :)

Give the pup name that fits and you like. If it is an odd name to others that is fine, but if it has meaning to you you it is not odd. My best example is my Miniature Schnauzer I had several years ago. He was black with a white spot on his chest so I named him 8-Ball. My parents thought that was a dumb name, but others loved it. My parents grew to love the pups name and miss 8-Ball as much as I do. Good Luck.

Male or female? What size is it? What color is it? Big ears? Long tail? What breed? Unless we have some information we can't give names that will really suit your dog because we don't know what it looks like or how it acts! We are not psychics!
