In 1889, Barnum decided to do something truly nutty, a tour of England with his circus. So after his buddy Bailey figured out how, exactly, you get a circus that normally takes up 10 rail cars onto a boat and across an ocean, Barnum's animals made their European debut.

The English, meanwhile, had already invented something called animal biscuits. Sensing a marketing moment, several companies started manufacturing animal biscuits with circus packaging and called them Barnum's. Soon the product migrated across the ocean, where Nabisco's forerunner, the National Biscuit Co., put them on U.S. store shelves in 1902. Originally called "Barnum's Animals,'' they became Barnum's "Animal Crackers'' in 1948.

They're cookies. To respond to a previous comment, the Brits don't call cookies, crackers, they're called biscuits. (I'm a Brit.) The British version has one side dipped in chocolate.

Wow. That is a stupid question, they are called animal crackers for a reason, they are crackers, cookies are a treat that consist of different ingredients to make the cookie soft and chewy, while crackers are hard, but very tasty.

I think they're cookies. They have the same texture and consistency as digestive cookies that people buy for babies, but they're in animal shapes. Not sure why they're named crackers, but remember the old saying ... "A cracker by any other name would taste as bad."

I consider them cookies because they have more sugar than salt. Animal crackers have around a long time, with a circus theme, maybe they were called crackers being associated with peanuts because of the animals.

I think they are cookies, But if I was English I would call them Crackers, because that's what they call cookies. So I think they must have been named by an Englishman.for the circus, because the box always had Barnum Crackers on it.

I think they're a cookie because they're sweet more like a cookie. And crackers usually aren't.

Cracker. They're made from graham cracker flour, and shaped like animals.

There was a doctor who once thought that if you gave your teen a graham cracker, before they went out on a date, it would promote abstinence. I don't know why anyone would think a cracker would keep people from having "fun", but hey... to each their own.

They are called crackers because it is in the name. I think cookies come in different colors and crakers are usually white or yellow. Cookies are usually sweet whereas, crackers can be both sweet and salty.

Cookies - Definitely cookies!!! Also the greatest thing to entertain the kids and keep them quiet while Mommy grocery shops. With my twins in the cart, I would always give them each a box. They had great fun eating and playing with them. I would just pay for cookies when we got to the register. That was the only time they were allowed to have them, so that made them special. No tears or tantrums for us!
