My job? The best job I had was the last one I had. I am too old to work seventy two hours straight and get up six or eight hours later and be ready to go. The job was not all experience, however. It required book knowledge of theory that I learned through correspondence school and manufacturer's schools. It was offshore in the Gulf of Mexico oil patch. I was the rig electrician. I had no help, I had nowhere to turn except to myself and the rig schematics. I was alone and that was it. I was damn good at it too. The pressure alone ran eight out of ten off the job. The danger got the number up to nine. I lasted until I knew that I could not guarantee I would come off a task alive or not and then I quit and retired. There are not many jobs left any more where a man can take his measure. I am glad I lived when I did. If I sound talkative to some of you regulars tonight it is because I have been to a BBQ and I am higher than a hawk's nest.

Knowledge is justified, true belief.

Long term technological developments need knowledge, even though over the very short term luck will do. The discovery of Uranus is a case in point: a lucky guess was seen as knowledge. Only later did the element of serendipity contained in the discovery become understood.

My job requires knowledge.
