We started out with a "Spiritual Commitment" ceremony on a beach at sunrise with our friends, flowers, and a gallon of Ripple wine. We wanted to follow that with a folk wedding (to make the marriage legal) in a folk bar that we loved. But we gave in to parental pressure and had a traditional church wedding. Neither set of parents approved of our union. My parents haven't spoken to us in 41 yrs. Her parents never said a kind word to me till the day they died. Our regret is that we didn't have a folk wedding like we wanted....
So, do what you want to do
Our daughter got married on a covered bridge. Our son got married in a ski villa. Both ceremonies were beautiful and both marriages are flourishing.

Sort of both.
We had a fairly traditional wedding with bridesmaids and musicians and all...we just didn't hold it in a church or with a minister or priest. We had a county clerk come out and perform the ceremony.
Then we had a picnic reception and dancing.
No regrets at all. We had a lovely, relaxed ceremony followed by a heck of a party with all our family and friends. We kept the budget from getting out of hand with a lot of DIY and creativity.
It was a fabulous time, and I wouldn't change it for all the tea in China.

I am having the best of both worlds for my wedding.
My fiancee is agnostic, I am pagan, but I love the look of church weddings (I love art history and architecture). We are getting married in a 19th century Gothic Revival brownstone chapel on a college campus in my hometown, but it's a civil ceremony. A longtime friend of mine is a JOP so for me it will be that much more meaningful. We are having the traditional ring bearers (my twin four year old cousins), flower girl (our daughter will be 20 months for that, should be interesting) and wedding party-four bridesmaids, four ushers. Not doing traditional music, haven't decided on anything yet, but looking at string music. I would like to walk down the aisle to Greensleeves, because it is such a lovely song. =)

We don't have JOP weddings in the UK, we have civil weddings conducted at the registry office, that's the alternative for people who don't want a church wedding. My fiance and I are not religious people and we did not want to be hypocrites that just use the church for our wedding day so we opted for a registry office service, the wedding is on the 1st September and we have no regrets at all about the way we have planned it, it's not right to just marry in a church and not actually care about the religion at all.

No regrets at all on what we did! Traditional church ceremony, with a reception and dance, for which we hosted about 200 guests.

I tried planning a big wedding and the stress was killing me. I got tired of everyone telling me what to do and how to do it, and seeing the costs, so we went to Vegas and got married without telling anyone. It was wonderful cause it was all about us and not the details and having to please and impress everyone. We just got married and we are very happy and have no regrets whatsoever. I would run away to Vegas all over again.
