Okay, this is a touchy issue. The media is completely corrupting your children. They encourage them to be violent, disruptive, and dissuades them from studying. However, the main issue I am concerned about is the promotion of promiscuity. It seems as though American girls have too much sex, at too young an age. It is as though they are treated as peice of trash rather than human beings with emotions. I don't understand why the American parents don't try to change that. What do you think?

Just to clarify my position, I am 18 - so I see what happens with my friends all the time. I am Jewish so my philosophy on premartial sex is different than the mainstream view of it. That's why I ask the question...

Honestly, it really doesn't matter WHAT the media does or teaches. If parents were to be more involved in the education of their children and the LIVES of their children, their children would be less likely to be promiscuous.
I watched movies and shows with nakedness and sexual content. I was bombarded with it on an almost daily basis. The majority of my friends in high school had had sex in their freshman year, some of them before high school. And yet, because my parents were so involved in my life and because my parents were involved in my education, I waited until I was 20 before I had sex, and that was with a man I eventually married.
We can't blame the media, they are out for money and will do what it takes to make it. However, we CAN blame the parents. While there ARE exceptions to the rule, if parents would just be more involved with their children, the children wouldn't have such a problem with sexual issues at such young ages.

For the most part I agree with you. I lost my virginity at the age of 12 and was very promiscuous through my teenage years. But I didn't do it because the media told me too, I did it because I got attention and it was an easy way for me to run away from my feelings. At 15 I got pregnant and continued with my promiscuity for years. It lightened up a lot but it was still there. Now that I am grown and have 3 children (a boy and 2 girls) and am married and actually living a life; I try to keep my kids away from things like that. I watch the movie they want to see..... My kids aren't too interested in tv anyway. We do a lot of things in the garden and do a lot of reading. We also go to church (which was something we only did until I turned 5 yrs old in my childhood). I try to give my kids a life of fun. Not evil. I wouldn't be so quick to say that ALL Americans are lazy horrible parents.... because I am not. But, unfortunately many are.

I haven't the faintest idea how to change my entire culture's perspective on violence and sex, so the best thing I can think to do is keep the TV off as much as possible and teach my son my moral values so that maybe, when he grows up, he can combat these issues in ways I can't. At the very least, I'm going to teach him to respect women and their bodies, and his own body, and sex in general. Of course, he might still turn out to be a wild teenager with a girl for every day of the week and a collection of pornography under his bed, but I hope I can do my job well enough that this won't be the case!

Look, I'm not american, but you should know, that it's affecting other countries too. America isn't the only country with movies from hollywood... everyone sees these movies with slutty girls who are treated and treat temselves as idiots. It's just going out of control. Like, how the media also advertises that. in order to be pretty, you need to be skinny with beautiful hair & great bust; but this all comes from satan's influence upon people. Everything is out of control--it a warning of an ending world-- american parents are just too ignorant to see this problem.
the problem begins with their raising children methods. It's never balanced. They never allow them to do ANYTHING. so when the kids get to a "pre teen-teen" age, they try to get rid of all that energy out by showing their parents how they can be responsible by doing such things they see as fun on tv.
you can even see the proof here in Yahoo Answers by listening to all these questions: examples...
-WHAT SHOULD I DO!! I'm 13 & my boyfriend wants to do it!
-How can I get my first kiss at 11 years old?
-I need a boyfriend & I'm 12!!
Then, some answers are really dumb, mostly coming from guys. Example...
How do I make my boyfreind happy--he's been a little dpressed...
answer: take off all your clothes
and then, just random things that have nothing to do with te question.
anyways, it's also men's influence on many things. Just search tonight & you will probably find at least 3 guys who have said something like that to a girl asking a question.

It is not just the media, it is the parents. In America today it is almost necessary for both parents to be working full time. Kids are growing up in daycare and parents aren't around enough a lot of the time to monitor their children and be effective parents. It is really a shame--even in the media with stars who are currently being viewed as bad influences (for example lindsay lohan and britney spears)...they all have family problems, come from divorced homes, etc etc. It is not necessarily the media, it is the family unit that is in trouble.

I think American teenage girls can also get positive images from the media, if they're talked about. You take a show like Greys Anatomy (granted lots of sex) or CSI, that has strong smart women role models (although often in low cut shirts)
but to get to those professions its very very tough to do as a teen mother. Then you of course have Oprah, Raven, etc. So they're out there. But then of course theres the dumb ones, that go and ruin it for everyone. Just be selective.

As a parent, I would have to say I agree with all the negative influences on our children. The problem with changing it is that the Liberal MAJORITY have already changed it to what it is now.
I think the best we can do is teach our children morals and ethics at home. Keep our children accountable for their actions and PRAY alot. Parents are children's biggest influences and teachers. So as parents we have to be good role models....

you seem to be making a generalization, but there is some truth to it. i don't think it's the media - it's how parents are interpreting the media and translating that info to their kids. i know plenty of girls who grew up watching risque tv shows and grew up with high enough self-esteems to allow them to make good decisions later in life. the parents need to communicate and be open with their kids that there is a big difference between art/fantasy and life/reality. it's a parenting issue and it might just have to do with lazy or complacent parenting. but not all americans have that problem. in fact, i don't know very many who do.
