There are quite a number of cargo ships that take a few passengers for hire, generally referred to as "tramp steamers". They are significantly cheaper that cruise ship but, obviously, don't have any of the amenities and don't stop nearly as often (read REALLY boring)...and don't have an extremely rigid route or schedule. check out http://www.freighter-cruises.com/tramp-voyages.html for an example...have fun!

My parents went around South America on a cargo ship about 30 years ago. They just had to pass a physical. They have special captains quarters and just a few guests on the ship. A great way to see various ports and not too expensive.

Strand trip LTD has routes from Philadelphia to Antwerp, takes approximately 12 days and expenses approximately $1500. From Antwerp, look into Grimaldi lines for transportation to the Med. in any different case, there are lines out of California to the a procedures East and via the Suez to Naples. they're high priced and take a month or longer. Grimaldi additionally gives you provider from Brazil to the Med.

yes, just make sure you have plenty of food and water and that you drill enough holes in your packing crate. lol
yes, many freighters take on a limited number of passengers other than the crew, it will cost you far less than the cost of a cruise ship - butt the accommodations will be less lavish / appealing than those of a cruise ship.

I spent two months on a ship as a stowaway and had to share my bed with the bosun to get away with it. I think I was ripped off as I later found it was the Birkenhead ferry........
