My dog has always chewed his nails even though I regularly trim them. In the past I've caught him licking his legs (like where his wrist is) but nothing serious. Today I noticed he was chewing on his legs so I took a look and he's been chewing on his paw pads, so bad that part of one is peeling off.
He's never done been so self-destructive before i'm not sure what to do. I intend on calling the vet in the morning but what do you think it could be? I want some ideas so when I talk to the vet I can have some information already.
I don't think he was doing it out of boredom, I was home so it wasn't sep. anxiety (although he does have that). We had a party last night so I did mop the floor and spray febreeze on the couches but that was yesterday, he didn't do this until this evening, more than 24 hours later, so I don't think it was the chemicals from that. Plus, I've used those chemicals before and he's never done that.
He's a year and a half old, any ideas are welcome!

I don't see anything wrong with the paw, no cuts, no objects, not even swollen.
He's on Purina Excellence Lamb & Rice, which he's been on for about 4 months. Prior to that it was Nutro.
He hasn't had any unusual foods today although I'm now wondering if he took the opportunity to snatch something during the party last night. I doubt he's bored or depressed, he was up super late last night so he's been sleeping all day today.

The part he chewed off has fallen off and I'm thinking maybe now it was really dry skin that peeled off. Do people think this could be a possibility? We haven't been able to get in to see the vet yet.

Do you have a cat? My dog never did this but a few months after hanging around with my cat he's been doing this so it might be that he just picked up on "cleaning himself". There was another time he did this and stepped on a pricker bush and had a bunch of needles in his paw but if you don't see anything you might want to try getting some paw protector and putting it on his pads. If you take him for walks the hot asphalt can burn his pads much like own feet and he might be licking them to make them feel better.

Sounds like an allergy. It could be to something in the cleaners, or it could be from pollen in the grass. Allergies are tricky in the fact that they can start up at any time. Your dog may not have been allergic to the pollen in the grass last year, but could be this year. Also, if you have a lawn service, it coule be anything that they treat the lawn with or anything that the mower that is used on your lawn comes into contact with.
Even if you walk your dog in public places, the chemicals, and pollens that any of the grass mowers come into contact with can bother your dog.
It's less likely that it is a flea problem, though not completely unlikely. Generally fleas are on the meatier part of the dog though. Best bet is to wait for what the vet says prior to trying to treat anything. You can try saoking the paws in warm water and drying off by hand if you'd like.

Could be chemicals, but febreeze is pet safe so not likely. Maybe it's a little irritation to the pad that he is making worse by chewing at it. Can you see a small cut? Maybe a small rock between the pads? Are the nails trimmed neat and short? A trip to your vet is the best, but in the meantime, check those things so you can let your vet know what you have or haven't seen already.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU8Iq
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

could be a wheat allergy. try slowly switching him over to a lamb & rice-based dog food. when switching to a new kibble, use 25% new/75% old for 5 days, then 50/50 for 4 days, then 75/25 for 3 days, then 100% new kibble after that, allergic reaction should stop after 2 weeks if behaviour is from food allergy.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/ZN0Vs
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Oh thats what my dog does. I looked it up online. It might mean that his paw hurts or if he's trying to clean it. Is the paw all pinkish and looks raw inside? well....if it is it might just be sore. My Toy/miniature poodle always jumps:thats how my dog got it.he always licks it when he walks. I learned that if a dog always licks it paw it might be in pain.

It sounds like allergies. Many dogs have allergies, either seasonal or food related. (food related is more likely) Try changing his food to an allergy formulated kibble. The Febreeze can irritate his already sensitive skin. I would hold off on using any chemicals/sprays until you talk to your vet.
