Me and some friends tagged up a abandoned building...since it was abandoned we figured it probably wasn't illegal. But we don't know for sure, is it illegal?

Yes. If it wasn't your building, you are vandalizing someone else's building. Just because it is abandoned doesn't mean no one owns it, and also, graffitti is an eyesore that cheapens the look of the community.

Most people find tagging repulsive.

Of course it is. Say its a seemingly abandoned and run down building. Someone still owns it. So if you or any of your friends are identified as doing it the owner will lodge a police report........ and the police will get someone in the crowd to fess up. The owner may file a report even without knowing who you are so if you are caught later doing something else someone in the crowd will fess up to the first crime.

The guy will sue out of the butt. Even if run down he can claim much for cleanup. So if you are under 18 they will owe it. If over 18 you will someday get your wages garnished. If over 18 even when you get your stuff together you will never get a great job, even 15 years later. They check credit as well.

Find something else to do.

Yes it is very illegal. Someone may own it and you don't have the right to damage their property, even if they aren't using it.

Tagging is one of those things that people don't consider a big deal. But it causes a lot of damage (in time and money to clean it off) and can *easily* add up to a felony.

It might be abandoned, but it's still owned by someone. If that someone is not you, then yes, it is illegal.

Unless you and your friends OWN the building, it was illegal.

Most likely. But the cops probably have better things to do than track you down and bust you.
