You set off the smoke alarm because you tried to bake something in your oven when it was dirty. High heat won't set off your smoke alarm, but smoke created from burning remenants of past baking events will. Clean the inside of your oven before you try to make cookies again.

Your oven or broiler may have something that is burning and causing the smoke - let the oven cool then wipe the bottom and sided with a clothe to remove any loose items. Cookies should be baked at 350 for 10-15 minutes. If it is going off simply due to heat because your smoke alarm is in the kitchen cover it with a shower cap while you bake and don't forget to remove it once you are through. Good Luck!

If your oven is set around 325-425 depending on what the recipe called out for you are doing nothing wrong. You may see smoke from the oven if there was something left in the oven before or something that needed to bake off. No need to cover the cookies...just follow the directions you have and they should come out fine. Just keep checking on them every several minutes or so.
