I totally agree with Silas G. I made a career in the Navy and so I'm familiar with it; esp. since I was in the medical department. I have never heard of shin splints as an ailment. But perhaps that is just another name for something.
Now forget about the praying and all that sort of thing and call him, encourage him to do his best and telling him that everyone in the family and his friends are pulling for him.

Oh, this is so exciting. My son finished boot camp about a month ago and had the same problem. I know they put my son on some type of medical leave so he could rest his legs. I will pray for him, what an honor. I know how much this run means to him. Please pray for my son. He was just diagnosed with asthma and they are giving him a medical discharge. He is so disappointed as he loved being in the army and wanted to make it a career. I know that God is in control of both our boys and has great plans for their lives. God Bless You and tell him we are praying for him.

I can offer my advice, as someone who has gone through basic military training.
Medical, first of all, shouldn't have okayed him to run. Since he's in a "run or wash out" situation, I'm assuming they did. Tell him, I know this is going to be hard, but tell him to try to run anyway. Chances are, he won't be able to do it. That's okay. If he's trying, and everyone around realizes he's putting in the effort and isnt' a quitter, then their next concern will be for themselves.
No one wants to be responsible for someone under their command getting seriously injured. If they're threatening to kick him out if he doesn't run, they're wrong, and the only way to show the higher ups what's going on is if he tries to run anyway.
Shin splints hurt. A lot. Especially when you're trying to run on them. But, have faith in the fact that no one will let him do any permanent harm to himself.
It's a lot like the game of chicken, when two cars are speeding toward eachother, and the one who swerves out of the way loses. Once they realize your son has what it takes to try to run on a hurt ankle, I can guarantee they'll swerve out of the way. If they don't, it won't be your son that has to deal with the worst of it. It will be the people in charge of your son.
Good luck to you. Please support your son in any way you can, and let him know that basic training doesn't go on forever.

He is in my prayers but I also must say that perhaps it is not God's will for him to be a soldier. If it is then he will make it, if not he needs to seriously seek God's Will for his life. I wanted to be a Marine when I was young but God had other plans for me. I pray for our troops and ask the Lord to watch over them daily.Especially now with things in the Middle East being so dangerous.

Yes; I will and your son will be fine. May God give your son strength to run this race and give him the desires of his heart, may God's will be done in this situation, may God bless and keep your son from all harm, physically and mentally, I rebuke satan in the name of Jesus; from attacking your son physically, all in Jesus Christ name, Amen.....

If it is meant to be it will be. Maybe there is a reason that he is having shin splints...maybe God has other plans for him. I will pray that God's will be done, not yours.

Tell him to suck it up. I did a fourteen mile road march in basic with a pulled calf muscle in one leg and a shin splint in the other. I carried the guidon, so I was up front with the drill instructor setting the pace. The ONLY thing that will get him through basic is his own grit and determination, and anything else is wasted effort. I hope he makes it, but the only one that can see him through this is himself...
