Car insurance is very expensive where I live, but I am going away to college next year. Since I will be living on campus away from home, I was hoping to switch it to another state.

You sure can switch your drivers license however you don't even need to do that to change your policy if you don't want to. You can just call your insurance company and give them your new address and get a new policy for that area, very simple

If the insurance is in your parents name and under their policy, then no I wouldn't do it. If the insurance is in your name, then you should have the option, if you have a permanent address that is in the state where you are going to school. If not, then I would keep it in the state which is your permanent residence.

As another thought, you will have to get your drivers license changed to the schools state also before you will get insurance in that state.

Well, you'll need something besides a campus address, to prove you live there - like a utility bill. And THEN, you're parents won't be able to declare you as a dependent. AND you'll have to get a new insurance policy and tags for the new state, which will mean the car will have to be titled to you.

AND DMV mail isn't forwarded . . .which could lead to a problem if they try to mail something to you during holidays or breaks . . .

I don't know that changing your insurance would require your changing your license. I lived in Ohio and Indiana and kept a NY license, and yet insured my cars in those states.

Check with an agent in your college town and see what's possible and what the rate will be. Unfortunately, in your age group, you're going to get hit harder no matter where you live - but if you can save a little, it's worth it.

The cheapest way to do this is to get insurance on your parents policy. Have them tell the insurance company that you are away at college. Your being away at college will give them a break on the rates.

You will have to get a premanet address there and live there anywhere from 30 to 60 days

you can change your address, but legally you dont have to. your permanent address is your hometown if you are a traditional college student.

its not that big of a deal, if you are moving off campus. if you are living on campus--the insurance company may know and may prevent you from changing it.

you can, but your going to have to re register and re tag it in the new state that you will be getting your license switched to. if you don't and you get stopped you might have a problem with the cop that stopped you.

good luck.
