The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no television for children under 2. And after 2, only a very limited amount. Why? Because it's just not the best use of time. There is also a suggestion there might be correlation between the quickly shifting images and ADD--the rapid change of the screen and something to do with the way kids view things later on.
Now, I'm a practical mother. I needed time to do things like go to the bathroom and clean up or cook. So I did allow TV. But it was very sparingly, maybe a total of a hour a day.
I think sometimes we need to do what we need to do, because life it's a textbook case of anything. But definitely, if TV is on all the time or the child is in front of it all the time, that's a big no-no--kids need to be active and not sedentary, and TV promotes sedentary lifestyle.

I don't know exactly what you mean by "safe." Children are usually safe while they are watching TV. But, TV is not necessary for kids and the more TV children watch the less time they have to spend on doing activities that really benefit them. If TV is used sparingly, it is probably not harmful. It also depends on what the child is watching. I never would let my children watch the news or anything the least bit violent or scary. Advertisements on TV are also terrible for children and they have no awareness that they differ in any way from the program they are watching. They have no ability to distinguish what is being taught to them from what is being sold to them from what is being unnecessarily scary for them. I think the bottom line is that a little bit of educational TV is probably an okay way for a kid to spend a half an hour or an hour a day but, more than that has it's negative side.

My son watched Baby Einstein DVDs while I showered in the morning until he was about 19 months old, then we got cable and started watching kid's shows in the mornings. He seems okay so far, but he's only 26 months, so we'll have to see. But I don't think it can hurt to let your daughter watch a little TV. And if you think she might be getting too much (falls behind in verbal development, social skills, or other developmental milestones), you can always turn the TV off. It's not like it will cause permanent damage or anything.

With proper supervision, there's nothing wrong with it. When I was a kid I loved to watch tv to. My mom would sit me down in front of the tv if she had to do chores and I'd watch a Disney movie or something educational. Make sure you don't let her sit too close to the tv since it puts strain on the eyes. Also limit how much she watches. You don't want her to become a couch potatoe. My mom would let me watch for 1-2 hours then would have me either read or play outside. Encourage physical activity and healthy eating...tv time is a "perfect time" for snacking...so feed her something nutritious.
I suggest Nick Jr. or PBS kids. They are educational and if you interact with your girl while watching, she's bound to soak up the information and grow mentally. Interaction is very important. Movie-wise, age appropriate movies that incorporate education are best. And if she likes the computer, you can always go to PBSKids.org to play educational games with her.
TV doesn't have to be viewed as "bad". As long as you are in charge of what she watches and how long she watches it, you should be fine.

as long as the tv isn't babysitting for you i think it's fine. when you have to depend on the tv then you have a problem.
recent studies have shown that children who watch more than 2 hours of tv a day said less at the age of 8 compared to those that watched less tv who engaged in better conversation. my husband read this recently. but my kids watch tv all the time and they are fine. most people are actually impressed with how smart my children are... so i think parenting takes a bigger stance on what kind of person a child will grow up to be than how much tv a kid watches.

I think a little entertainment is alright. I am one of those people who despises television programming, so I don't have cable or otherwise in my home. I think commercials are a large part of the evil of TV. However, we have an extensive collection of kids DVDs and I let them watch their favorites for limited amounts of time.

PBS kids is good and educational......also when my son was that age I would let him watch DORA and Blue's Clue's and he learned alot from that. He started talking very young and could say alot....before he was 2 he knew some multiplication tables and all of his body parts in english and spanish...but you have to sit with him and interact...Good Luck!
