I'm an atheistic catholic by the way... In that, I think the catholic church is a wonderful institution and it does great things in the community, especially in helping families in times of bereavement. I plan to bring up my (future) kids as catholics, as I feel that it's an important part of an irish childhood, and furthermore, the teachings of the church are as good a moral compass as any, and they are a good point of reference....
It's just the whole God part I've the problem with, as in, not believing in one.

Why do you need the church to teach your kids the morals you want them to have?

I'm an atheist so I'll ask Catholics to correct me if I'm wrong. If you don't believe in god then you're not a catholic. You associate with the church and work with them to help the community, but I think that any catholic will tell you that belief in god is a prerequisite for actually being a member of the church.

If you don't believe in God, then by definition you are not a Catholic. You might harbor the same general morality that they do, but that does not make you Catholic.
I think we feel like we are required to subscribe to a religion these days. Why? It obviously doesn't feel right to you. As far as your kids...they are *your* responsibility, not the churches.

No. Break down the word "atheism". "A" means without. "theism" means religion. If you are an atheist then you believe in atheism and therefore you are without religion. You can still join any group you want, catholic church or whatever. I used to be a member of a classic Chevy club but that didn't mean that I prayed to my 56 Nomad each night.

you can be atheist and religious, just not a theistic religion. Being an atheistic catholic kind of seems like a stretch. If you don't believe in God then you're not Catholic

You can be kind and fun loving as in helping our in families and churches, but you cannot be religious and atheist at the same time.
I help with churches (my wife is a catholic) and temple (I am a atheist buddhist) but that does not mean I am religious.

Apparently you can I mean that is the only requirement of being an atheist the belief that there is no god. I find it rather odd and interesting at the same time but what ever works for you.

No, not really. If you go through the motions of being a observer of any religion, while in your heart you realize there is no god and the religion is all BS, you're not religious, you're just a hypocrite.
