i have 2 female schnauzers from the ages of 5-7 months. they REFUSE to house train. they will be fine for about an hour and then decide to use the house as their personal toilet. i am ready to tear my hair out!! we just got new carpeting not too long ago, and i'm at the point of getting rid of them if they can't control themselves!! we have a male bulldog and shcnauzer also... just a side note, i've never had a problem housebreaking my male dogs, but my females are always a HUGE problem!!! what can i do--aside from getting rid of them?

they are crate trained, that's why i don't understand why they go in the house? any female dog i've ever owned does this!! but my males have always trained within a month. i guess my lesson is to just stick with the males!!
they are both in perfect health, just stubborn as ever!!!

When you catch them eliminating inside the house, immediately scoop them up (push the tail between the legs to get them to stop), and take them outside (or to papers on the floor or your designated spot). It's very important not to scold or yell at them, or else they will associate the process of eliminating with something bad and try to hide it from you by going in places you can't normally see. Remember, simply scoop them up, take them out, and tell them "potty" or "outside".

During the times you can't keep an eye on them, consider crate training. Place them in a crate or kennel with just enough room for them to turn around and lay down comfortably. The theory is that dogs do not want to eliminate in the same space they rest in. This will be a gradual process, but the should get the hang of it pretty quickly at 5-7 months.

Generally puppies can hold their bladder/bowels 1 hour per year of age (to about 8-9 hours max). So you should be able to leave them from 5-7 hours at a time. Make sure you do that gradually as well, so they don't experience separation anxiety.

Remeber to be patient, calm, and not angry. Hope this helps.

UPDATE:
Are they spayed? Do they act dominant? I wonder if they're doing it for territorial reasons. Make sure you spray "Off" or some other type of deoderizing spray on the trouble areas so they don't think it's the designated potty spot. Other than that, I think patience and consistancy is the key.

In most instances I would have to say female, because of the urge of a male to mark. However I have a Chihuahua that I housebroke in 2 days. He was the easiest ever and he will not use the bathroom in the house.

Maybe it's a breed thing?? I do find some girls a little harder to housetrain than the males, but never 5-7 mos of age.. More like 16 weeks of age max...
When they go out to pee, do you go with them and praise them??

Have you had them looked by the vet? A dog with a medical problem such as a UTI can be near impossible to housetrain.

That would be my first step in figuring this out.
