As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum wa-Raḥmatullāhi wa-Barakātuhu (hope I got it right!). Let ME be the one to apologize for all the uneducated fools who answered your question with poor adab. I have written this many times before, but I will say it again. YOU have NO reason to apologize because of the actions of a few. Your ability to come on here and not rise to to these morons (I'm not a muslim and I want to smack some sense into them!) should be commended. You are proof that Islam is not an inherently violent or oppressive religion, and the greatest example you can give someone is to live your life the way you are showing me right now; with tolerance and peace... even for those who in all likelyhood deserve neither.

I look at all organized religion as the cause of the worlds pain but it is far to easy for some to point to the muslim faith and lay all the blame upon your feet the muslim religion christianity and the hebrew faith all share the same roots and all come from the same culture of the middle east. You asked that we all look into islam I ask one thing of you to.Look into yourself and ask with all the different religions and there historys and how their books were written and changed thru interpretation and time how do you know who the true god is.I say only god knows who he is and all that I can do is to be the best person and love that which he created which is all the different people of the world and treat them with respect.

I understand (I think) where you are coming from.
Don't worry: it's a similar thing about the great religions, whether Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim or Buddhist. It could be cultural, as you posit, but in the end, I think it is human nature, the same human nature capable of great compassion, wisdom, understanding and fraternity. I speak here about the best that humanity has to offer, including the arts and science.
Yet the same human nature is responsible for attrocities in the name of God and of religion. Here we find cruelty and lack of respect, indeed hatred, for the believers of other faiths.
What I am certain about is that the Catholic Church under Pope John Paul II, and the present Pope, Benedict XVI, has been calling for a rapprochement among the great religions.
Many Jews, Muslims, Orthodox and Protestants have warmed up to the Church and reached out.
Be comforted with the fact that not all people believe in what the media presents: I for one always read news about religion with critically.
In my own little way, I have collaborated with Muslims in my own country in improving their lives. They have been very appreciative of my little efforts, and I would say we are very good friends. I am from the Philippines and up to 5% of the people are Muslims, mostly living in the southern islands. It is unfortunate that the Muslim provinces in the Philippines are among the poorest. I want to help them through poverty somehow, and I try my best to understand their religious and cultural differences from the rest of my countrymen.
You are correct, it is unfair to impute fundamentalism to the entire body of Muslims.
But I feel compelled to ask you a question: why aren't moderate Muslims speaking out? Or is media blocking their voices from being heard?
Yet I remain hopeful that God will find a way that we believers in the one true God will find peace and harmony. May God will it! (As you Muslims would say, Inshallah!)
By the way, my dear sister, my greetings of love and peace to you!
May the Almighty and Merciful God bless you!

don't take this the wrong way, but
a) sorry, I am not going to learn Islam. it's nothing about the "recent events" or any hatred toward muslims, but I find the more I learn, the more I am likely to pick at little things. I don't wanna be accused of being a muslim hater.
b) again, I'm picky, so I'm pointing out you said "everyone has become a bit distant from us". I don't treat muslims like terrorists and I have muslim friends
c) I don't believe in tolerance, which is basically "letting what you hate function unpreterbed or uncriticized". no I don't hate people, I just don't like Islam's teachings (distant deity, the first few verses of the qu'ran are directed at you know what).

Thank you for your beautiful message. I wish we all could just love and get along in peace and harmony, but we are a mixed up bunch; like the Tower of Babel. My Muslim husband wishes I would convert, and I did at one time at least consider reading the Quran, but i am a christian child of God, and if it isn't in the Bible I just can't get into it.
Would Muslims consider learning about us and reading the Bible?

Thank you and I accept and return the love to you as a Christian. I am sorry for the many people who same mean and hateful things in the name of God. I know it is not all Islam that hates us, it is the minority. Although the minority does still work out to be a large number as Islam has many followers. I am very scared of the extremists Muslims and their plans. Thank you for sharing your message of love and peace.

I've read the Quran and I would have to say that your portrayal of its teachings are not 100% accurate. I saw very mixed messages in it.
However, I doubt there is a single religion on the planet that doesn't have a blemish here or there.
I think the important thing is to realize that, no matter what religion people are, the average person just wants to live in peace and go about their business as pleasantly as possible. I'm absolutely certain the average Muslim prefers to live a tranquil life and see their friends and family go through life with no unnecessary violence, danger, or other unpleasantness.
Unfortunately, there are a few psychos out there that want to cause unnecessary suffering. These psychos exist in all religions and cultures.

As with all religions, you have taken what you wanted to learn from your scriptures, which thankfully is a peaceful message. I have no problem with people of any faith provided you don't try to convert me when I haven't asked for it, or try to blow me up because of your beliefs. I believe you to be sincere, however, Americans have been conditioned by the media to dislike Muslims because America is a largely Christian land that wants its hands on a resource largely controlled by Arabs (whom they associate with Islam). You have your work cut out for you.
PS- I lived next door to a Muslim gentleman for 5 years. He was one of the nicest people I ever knew.

I'll love Muslims. I can love without agreeing. Not tolerance but love, I'll do that no problem. I still dont understand the part about the 7 virgins though.
