It's illegal to kill or trap a cooper's hawk without a permit, though that dosent seem to stop some people. I own pigeons, and have lost about half my flock to redtails. The hawk even entered through the pigeon trapdoor and had to be let out once. In fact, we had three soaring above today. Heres what I do to protect my pigeons from hawks:
I let my pigeons out for about an hour each day, and I try to stay outside with them the entire time, I use that time to clean the coop and feeders. I never let my pigeons fly at dusk or dawn because here that is when the hawks hunt the most. During summer, although the pigeons dont like it as much, I let the out during the hottest time of day, when the hawks are resting. The coop is locked and secure (including the trap)when the pigeons are in and I don't use the aviary anymore--it attracts hawks. I have heard that hanging shiny objects such as CD's or mirrors shines bright into the hawks eyes and deters them, I tried it but I'm not sure yet just how well it works. Also, if you have crows or ravens around, do whatever you can to attract them, since crows/ravens mob hawks and drive them away. Whenever I see a hawk, even if it is just sitting on a branch, I scare it away, sometimes throw rocks/sticks and yell to scare it away. I've shot slingshots a few times, I dont intend to hurt the hawk but a shot when it hits wood makes a loud cracking sound that scares the hawks away. Anyways, good luck protecting your pigeons, I know it's frustrating...

"Why do you think Coyotes are picking off domestic dogs?" You answered this question. We are removing more of their habitat, their prey is moving on. Coyotes tend to go after the old, the sick, and the small domestic animals. If they get desperate enough, they can attack young children as well. "What do you think can be done to prevent this?" Keep your pets on short leashes, don't leave them outside unattended, stick to the sides of the street without so much brush, and carry bear-spray and a long walking stick on walks. "Do you think some people over-exaggerate as to the severity of the issue?" While you are correct in Coyotes not attacking those who could cause them damage, if they get desperate enough they will. Also, some people can sometimes mistake Wolves for Coyotes if they don't know the difference and the animal is in the wrong lighting. If you live in an area with both, I think you should take wolves into consideration. While they usually won't come near humans, they, like coyotes, can get desperate enough to try.

Not to much you can do. Legally. Coopers Hawks as other birds of prey are protected. Possession of a live one without a wildlife rescue license is a crime. Possessing a dead one or any part there of is a crime. The hawk has found a steady food supply. It isn't going anywhere.
Coyotes fall into a different category. They are for the most part consideredpest animals.

No, it is not the same thing. A coopers howk is protected by the migratory bird treaty act. It is illegal to kill them. You need to make your pigeon coop predator-proof. If the hawk gets them when they are flying free, there is nothing you can do about it.

coyotes eat pets ALL the time...and no one kills them. Not sure where you are getting your info from. Sorry but if you cannot predator proof the pen you keep your pigeons in..than it is your own fault. YOU are perfectly capable of solving the problem by making repairs/adjustments to your pigeon cage/pen. Also, Cooper's Hawk are protected by law, and cannot be harmed, trapped, killed, etc. Pigeons are NOT protected by law.
