Can you eat mussels found in the rivers of pennsylvania? I cannot find any information about this online, but would like to try it. How would you cook them?

If you are talking fresh water wild mussels, I wouldn't eat them. Full of bacteria, and higher than allowed mercury levels, that can cause illness, nausea, direaha, etc. They should in no way be compared to mussels, that a lot of us buy and consume from commercial sources. You don't need to take my word for it. Pennsylvania Department of Natural resources has a website that covers this subject and the dangers involved in eating them.

If these "mussels" are from a river keep in mind that mussels are bottom feeders as are most shellfish. They eat the very dredges that are considered waste by us. So that's what your eating.

Clams, craw fish, mussels and other bottom feeders should be carefully considered cleaning and boiling carefully so as not to get infected with the very bacteria they can eat but, will harm you.
Considering this, is it worth it to eat these shellfish?
