A question for Christians - why did your God allow this to happen? Surely the folks who were in the house of worship should be the ones most likely to be protected by the Divine, wouldn't you think?

A gunman opened fire in the sanctuary of a southwest Missouri church Sunday, killing three people and wounding several others, authorities said.

Agnes - I'm not an atheist. I was just wondering how Christians could reconcile the "God has a reason for everything" line of thought with "That reason sometimes includes being murdered in a house of worship" reality.

The "He was teaching the congregation a lesson" idea is mind-boggling to me. What could the congregation have done to justify having someone come in, hold them hostage, and then kill three of them?

Because God isn't Santa Claus. He doesn't stop all the evil in the world and hand out presents and cookies...
Bad things are going to happen in this world--get used to it. It's not God's fault--it's ours.

Christ said many would be tested for their faith. Think of the thousands sacrificed by Nero ,feed to the lions used as human torches to light his gardens . As long as we are here on earth untill the second coming our faith shall be tested in every concievable evil way. You ,perhaps would like to say that if there is a God He wouldn't allow such acts. Well if you are free to choose righteousness then you are just as free to choose the perversity of the same. Now ask yourself are you able to deny the existence of God because evil offends you ,so you claim if there was a God this would not happen.

Sin and the devil walked through that church door. A hedge of protection is being lifted from our country because the churches are not preaching the Word of God. The devil has crept in and our churches are almost without any armor. Spiritual Warfare is not something that most churches even mention. How many churches do you know that are preaching the coming of the Lord? How many churches are preaching to repent of your sins, get your hearts right with God and walk in the Holy Spirit. Churches have become social clubs and the Bible is not even being taught.
Apart from the truth, man goes in circles. If we are not walking in the Spirit of God, meaning the Holy Spirit is within us, then what makes us think that the Scripture "No weapon formed against me," will stand?
Jesus said, "We must be born again." First born of water by our mother's womb and born again by the Spirit and our reconnection with God by the Spirit. "He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world." This Scripture means "He" the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, "The Father in Me and Jesus in the Father." "I and the Father are One." When the Holy Spirit comes in us we have Jesus living in us and we are part of the Body of Christ. Jesus being the Head and us being the Body of Christ. God is Spirit.
How many churches do you know that talk about the Holy Spirit? How many can heal the sick and cast out demons?
Any one of those 50 people could have said, "I bind you wicked and foul spirit in the name of Jesus and commanded that they leave the house of God." Did anyone have enough faith to stand against the demon within the shooter?
My friend, people in the churches do not believe the Word of God. They are acting out Christianity.

You are going to have a hard time blaming god for this one. I don't think she even owns a modern firearm.
If you read the bible, god appears frightened of iron and advised one of the early Jewish popular figures to be careful of the invaders. I forget just which imaginary figure it was but he and god were hiding in the rocks, above the field where the fight was taking place and god warned whomever to take care, the invaders had chariots made of a then new material…iron!
In the case you mentioned I believe you are going to be stuck with the culprit who wielded the firearm. I don’t even believe we can blame the gun like we usually do.

I will pray for those who were killed and wounded. If you read the bible first christens were martyr fed to the lions, and other God showed his Merci to them by intervene. I am Christians and I don't believe that I am better than any one else or supremer and deserve better things from God. I am the last of the line, because those who are will be first. Let it happen on earth as it is in heaven. I don't know God's plans, but I pray for them for God show his mercy and love to them.

God gave people free will. Why would you find it hard to believe that a lost person would attack Christians? Even big business try to persecute Christians who will not bear false witness against others. God does not promise your life gets easier when you become a christian but He will make your path straight and give you peace in the midst of the fire. Jesus gave all for us that we might be able to fellowship with Him. To God be ALL Glory Honor and Praise!

I find this appalling but I have no answer to your question. We just accept with faith that He knows why he allows certain things to happen.. But I really don't know if the word "allow" is the correct descriptive word. I know the battle of good against evil is in all of us. It's called a conscious. Some of us are weaker at times and give in to the bad, sometimes with devastating outcomes like this. I really wish I knew the answer.

God is not at fault. What was He suppose to do? Appear before the person and say, "no, no, don't hurt those people."
Don't blame God for the criminal acts of a crazy man!

If you apply that theory to everything then you would be constantly asking why God allows anything to happen. He gives men free will to be good or bad- its up to us to decide what we are- until such time God seems fit to change things.
