I had the best results when I took my car to a auto detailing shop and they used a steam cleaning washer,That did the best job, it removed alot of the oil leakage on the engine. Those stupid engine degreasers never work. because they never remove the gunked up areas.

When the engine is cold( hasn't been run) use some 409 or other good degreaser to spray the engine. Let it sit for 5 or ten minutes then hose it off. If you regularly use a self service car wash, just open the hood and select the engine cleaner to spray it with then rinse it while rinsing the truck. A clean engine will run cooler and more efficiently and is much nicer to work on. Your mechanic will bless you.

Absolutely OK to go to a local car wash and blast away with regular car wash soap. You'll be amazed by the nice clean results. Hit the inner fenders, all shrouding, battery, firewall, coils, wires, heads, intake and air cleaner box. The trucks are high enough to crawl underneath as blast as much as you are able to get to. No reason to leave the motor running either.
Water MAY only short 15 -20 year whipped old plug wires. If you think about it, what happens when your front frame cross-member and tires splashes water on your motor while driving---nothing.

Just buy a couple of cans of Gunk Engine Degreaser, spray it on a moderately warm engine, then hose it off. Just be careful you don't squirt a lot of water either into the engine (through injectors and/or carburetors) or into the electronics (electricity and water don't like each other!). Then run the vehicle to dry it and you're done! Good luck!
