Well, sometimes when I have my treatments, that's pretty much all I do. Sleep, eat, pee. ALthough the pee is from all the extra fluids they give you to keep you hydrated.

But since she isn't on treatment, this is a bit unusual, contact your doctor about it just to be sure.

All of what is happening except the staying in the bathroom for hours is normal. She probably has some type problem related to her bowels or urinary function that she does not want to tell you about. She may be very constipated due to taking pain medicine. Try and find out what is going on and see if you can help with whatever is bothering her. If you can not find out, let hospice know what is happening. Many older people would rather die than talk about bowel issues. Step in and do whatever needs to be done to keep her comfortable.

If she is locking herself in the bathroom fix the door where it can not be locked. Tell her you need to be able to get into the bathroom in case of an emergency. good luck

I have seen this with both my grandmothers and mother who all died with cancer. They say chemo is "suppose" to make it easier when the time comes to die. I have seen the with and without and say flip a coin. It isn't pretty either way. The sleeping and not eating totally normal. The bathroom deal with my grandma who did not take chemo was long episodes but not because she was peeing. Blood was coming out. When it came out her rectum she was in there longer because she said there were spasms and very painful. She would just sit hoping they subsided. The pain meds get where they require more the closer it gets. It gets wicked. I think to expect anything different here would be unrealistic.

You don't say where her cancer is located, which affects the symptoms.

The only one that is possibly odd is the need to pee a lot, but it depends on the type of cancer, and given her prognosis, trying to find an alternate cause for the excessive urination is probably an unnecessary intrusion for her.

Support, privacy and peace sound like what she needs at the moment.

I am so sorry to hear about your step grandmother. I think she made a good choice going w/out chemo. cuz my dad suffered in a prolonged manner in my opinion. Her behavior is absolutely normal.Try to distract her if u can w/ her favorite TV show or movies or something. Ask her what her very favorite food is that u could make or buy for her.Tell her she had a wonderful full life and she helped a lot of people.Tell her that she's lucky because she gets to see______(whoever's past on) before you and that _______ and the rest of her family will be waiting 4 her in heaven(if u believe :)). Most every1 who has a near death exper. says they say those who've passed on before them.Tell her that her arms are dry and rub lotion on them. They are often touch deprived.Of course tell her u lov her.She will be just fine.

I don't mean to sound mean or offensive to you, but what behavior would you consider to be normal for someone who has a terminal illness and hasn't received any treatment? Not eating is normal and she's probably in pain. Maybe she's constipated, maybe she's throwing up, maybe she's crying. Who knows? Do you care about her? If yes, this would certainly be the time to be kind and helpful.

it sounds about right for cancer; my Mom stopped eating and started sleeping all the time right before she died. I don't know about the peeing part really...

Maybe you should have your folks check with her doctor to see if something else is going on.

Why don't they put a catheter in her? That would make her much more comfortable. She wouldn't have to keep getting up to pee.
