The original and true philosophy of the martial arts is to be accomplished in the arts of war. Over the years many have added spirituality and, socially acceptable beliefs to the practice of the martial arts. If you strip all of that away though, the martial arts are about nothing more or less then the way of the warrior. Martial, after all is a term that means war, taken from its root word Mars the god of war. Arts, means the practice. So basically you are practicing the arts of war. Over the centuries, martial arts have become more about defense, seeing as how actual hand to hand fighting is rare in military situations. It is unfortunately becoming more and more of a sport. If you put in rules to a fight, it is no longer a fight, it has become a competition.

If you look at the very early origins of martial arts in China they say that it came about from the monks being taught certain aspects of two major fighting arts from India for the purpose of exercising so that they could remain more healthy. Bodhidiarma introduced this to the monks and is also credited with introducing Zen as well to mainland China. It is also thought that this as well as other aspects spread to Okinawa since it was a crossroads for trading between Japan and mainland China as early as around 580 AD where it continued to evolve and develop mainly in three different regions. The evolvement of Jiu-Jutsu in Japan at the same time in the late 1400s AD from elements of Kung Fu and Summo also have a very close tie to religion and certain philosophical aspects that are mainly present in only Eastern culture; especially China and Japan. While much of this is all very closely tied to fighting and the protection of one's self I also think you can't just discard those ties to culture and religion that many of the martial arts also have. Unfortunately in the western world much of what is taught and handed down are only the fighting aspects.

Each Martial Art styles are different in ways of practice, but contain essentially the same goal: to maximize one's energy level and physical abilities. Each Martial Art, in their own culture, have subsystems, and subsystems under those. Each of those difference were due to the Instructors' philosophical views. For example, Martial Arts: Hard vs. Soft, External vs. Internal Martial Arts is not one easily discribed. Like saying: Wing Chun vs. Wushu ...Instructors should not mix Martial Art History with Martial Art philosophy. The Martial Art, is simplicity and if you are a practitioner, live through its meanings and concepts.

It was created both to destroy and protect. Inchinese martial art, the word 'wu' actually has a deeper meaning to it.

It is made up of two word 'zhi' and 'ge'. 'Zhi' means to stop and 'ge' is a spear-like weapon used by foot soldiers in olden days. The word it self means to stop fighting or to stop war. The word 'wu' is made up by our ancesters to remind us to practise martial arts as so that the beautiful arts are not lost while not having the intention to start a war or fight.
