SS stands for "Schutzstaffel", or "Protective Squadron".
The SS was established in 1925 as a personal guard unit for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler between 1929 and 1945, the SS grew from a small paramilitary formation to become one of the largest and most powerful organizations in Nazi Germany. The Nazis regarded the SS as an elite unit, the party's "Praetorian Guard," with all SS personnel selected on the principles of racial purity and unconditional loyalty to the Nazi Party.
As a bit of trivia, The all-black SS uniform was designed by SS-Oberführer Prof. Dr. Karl Diebitsch and Walter Heck (graphic designer) and made by Hugo Boss (as in the "HUGO BOSS" brand of high end German fashion), some workers being prisoners of war forced into labor.

An elite corps of combat troops (SS is short for Schutzstaffel, which is German for “protective shield”) formed originally within the German Nazi party as a bodyguard for Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders and led by Heinrich Himmler. During the 1930s, Hitler steadily expanded the responsibilities of the SS to include the suppression of his political opponents within Germany and the persecution of the Jews. The SS supervised the concentration camps.

SS stands for SchutzStaffel (Protective Squad). The SS was originally established to provide security for Hitler, such as doing away with anyone who he deemed as an enemy. They purged the Nazi party of the SA (storm troopers).
Hitler's personal bodyguard grew into a full SS panzer division, the first among many divisions of the Waffen-SS. The Waffen-SS was the field army of the SS, considered racially elite and given the best equipment. Even foreign units of the Waffen-SS were raised. These troops were loyal to Hitler and almost always outside of Army command.

no it wasn't the SS. there were several "elite" units in the German military. not any army. there was for instance the Hermann Goering panzer division, or the fallschimerjager divisions (paratroopers) along with several WaffenSS panzer divisions. and numerous other non divisional units.
